34 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | APRIL 2016 H arper is a Scottish name that means patience and courage, which is fi tting for an eponymous Los Angeles salon dedicated to the often-arduous task of advancing eco efforts within the beauty community. As one of the fi rst spaces certifi ed by Green Circle Salons, a Canadian-based organization that helps spas master earth-friendly practices (read more about it on page 32!), Harper routinely recycles 80 percent of its waste materials, including glass, paper, plastic, metal, old or broken tools, hair, chemicals and color by-products. In the U.S. alone, salon waste amounts to nearly 460,000 tons a day—a fi gure that could be drastically diminished if all facilities committed to similar reprocessing endeavors. "It's important to act now, so that future generations may benefi t," enthuse stylists and owners Carla Gentile, Nicole Hartmann and Nikki Pittam. "We want our children, our guests' children and their children to be able to enjoy our planet as much as we do." Terra love further extends to the decor. Guests pass through iconic Grecian blue front doors into a high-ceilinged loft boasting exposed brick walls and brilliant sunshine. Earth-tone colors complement the front desk, stations and retail shelves, all of which were carved from reclaimed wood. "We bought an old barn in Indiana and our builder, Josh Jackson at L.A.'s Arbor Exchange, constructed the pieces," reveals the trio. Additional furniture and chairs scored at midcenturyLA complete the modern, Zen-like vibe. A general feeling of low-key luxury permeates, from the bottomless mimosas and complimentary chocolates to bathrobes folded to resemble bow-tied presents. Even the ice cubes are unique. "We freeze mini lemon triangles, cucumber slices and blueberries, because little details let guests know how much we care," the owners note. Stylists likewise receive special attention. "Harper Shares" events, hosted every few months, allow in-house pros to stand up before the group and demonstrate a skill or technique at which they feel especially profi cient. "We've had barbering classes from one key hairdresser, plus behind-the- scenes styling from another who works on editorial shoots," say Gentile, Hartmann and Pittam. And outside educators from top companies, such as Oribe, are routinely invited to divulge their expert tips of the trade, proving that continued education plays a hugely important role at Harper. With its nonconformist spirit and earth-loving vibe, Harper channels Southern California chic. —FRANCESCA MOISIN Conversations/ Salon of the Month Details, Details Chairs: 13 Stylists: 18 Haircare: R+Co, Oribe, V76 by Vaughn Color lines: L'Oréal Professionnel, Goldwell, Wella Professionals, Schwarzkopf Professional Top spring trend: "Longer hair will get more styled, while colors will be tone on tone," predict Harper Owners Carla Gentile, Nicole Hartmann and Nikki Pittam. "The bob that hit so big in 2015 will likewise stay hot this year."
