90 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | OCTOBER 2017 Passion Project We're going "Back to the Future" in Matrix artistic director Nicholas French's timeless Programs of Passion class. Tell us about your class. Back to the Future is a class based on the extraordinary journey and heritage of the French family—from Freddy French, a lather boy in 1922, to myself in 2017—a Matrix artistic director and multiple North American Hairstyle Award winner. We travel through time and share how my father, Freddy, developed the global brand "French of London," which produced groundbreaking new techniques and created one of the fi rst salon chains, as well as multiple product lines and numerous Vogue covers. One of Freddy's greatest achievements was co-designing the Denman hair brush. He had the journey of a lifetime in the industry and his extraordinary story comes through via thousands of shows, print work and video. What have attendees learned from the class? They have learned to go "back to the future." This means using ideas and techniques from the past while updating them in a fresh way. What is your favorite part of teaching the course? I love revisiting my father's amazing past and demonstrating his groundbreaking techniques. He invented a modern way to make life easier for the professional hairdresser. What is the main takeaway you would like students to leave the class with? I would like students to learn the hundreds of techniques they can use immediately in their everyday lives in the salon, from understanding who is sitting in your chair to creating quick and beautiful styles. What advice would you give for stylists considering a Passion class? Be open to new ideas and concepts, and remember that you are only learning something new when you feel uncomfortable. Nicholas French COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS News WORLD AFFAIRS Picture over 600 stylists from more than 24 countries meeting up in the heart of Sardinia, Italy. This ultimate hair party dream came to life thanks to John Paul Mitchell Systems. The company's second- annual Global Gathering, hosted by Robert Cromeans, John Paul DeJoria, Stephanie Kocielski, Angus Mitchell and the artistic team, brought together worldwide talent—all eager to enhance their skills and learn from each other. In addition to elevating business know-how, creating runway looks, gaining experience with Skylight (the hand-painting clay lightener) as well as the POP XG shades, stylists were shown how to create two timeless options for the most crucial cuts— by either taking away weight or bulking hair up. So much entertainment and information packed in just a few days? Well worth it! John Paul DeJoria on stage in Sardinia, Italy. Do Good, Look Good Doing good looks good—especially when Sport Clips is involved! The rapidly growing franchise recognized the critical need for blood donations and did something about it. Teaming up with the American Red Cross, the company provided a voucher for a free haircut to those who donated blood throughout the month of September. Vouchers expire on November 1, so if you haven't redeemed yours yet, now is the time! Amanda Palm, corporate communications manager of Sport Clips, says, "There is always a need to maintain the blood supply in our country, and a free haircut is a simple way we can thank donors for their lifesaving donation."
