28 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | FEBRUARY 2018 L I V E & LE A R N Profi les I f not for a random meeting with Dermalogica founders Ray and Jane Wurwand, Jerry Wenker might still be grinding out a gig in the pharma/biotech industry, where he spent 25-plus years leading teams, managing investments for product development, and overseeing mergers and acquisitions. But that experience proved critical when he joined the skincare giant in 2007 as president and COO, diving headfi rst into the beauty industry. "It's a big move to leave one industry and join another very different one, but Ray and Jane are two incredibly unique, focused, driven and passionate people," Wenker explains. "One cannot stand still as everything is evolving, and you need to defi ne your path." Under his charge, Dermalogica made signifi cant breakthroughs, from launching its fi rst academy to dwindling online diversion. But when the company was sold to Unilever in 2015, Wenker again found himself at a crossroads. Wanting to work with an independent brand, Wenker was attracted to Glo Skin Beauty's (@gloskinbeauty) results-oriented, cruelty-free formulations and jumped at the chance to join as CEO. "What excited me most about Glo was the potential to do something special," he recalls. "I saw a lot of opportunity to unify skin and beauty and to build upon health and wellness—offering products and support to the professional beauty market that deliver what clients want today." True to form, Wenker set to work; he jokes about "creating havoc everywhere from the warehouse to our account doors." Last summer, the company (previously GloProfessional) rebranded as Glo Skin Beauty and recently moved to haute new headquarters in Denver. Meanwhile, the brand has invested heavily in Glo Expert Studio, its online learning university, as well as hands-on learning to help professionals grow with Glo. "We've established a very dynamic look for the brand, but we're also focused on supporting our professional beauty industry," Wenker notes. "It's a very exciting time for those of us—the independents." Moving boldly from biotech to beauty, Jerry Wenker embraces his decade-long journey in reimagining skincare companies, both large and small. ÑTRACY MORIN The Pathfi nder GETTING PERSONAL 1 I'm an avid golfer; I love getting out on the links with friends. 2 I treasure my relationship with my wife and best friend, Shari.
