80 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JANUARY 2018 News Passion Project This month, Matrix celebrity stylist George Papanikolas takes us to Hollywood in his Programs of Passion "Celebrity to Reality" class. Tell us about your class. "Celebrity to Reality" showcases my fast and easy signature balayage techniques. Each one of these techniques takes under 30 minutes of application to effortlessly recreate the signature looks I do on my celebrity clients. What do attendees learn? The key takeaway is to learn strategic placement to get maximum impact from each highlight. Attendees have learned how to create a contemporary, fashionable and effortless look that clients are demanding while keeping the integrity of the hair as healthy as possible. What's your favorite part of teaching the class? I can do these techniques with my eyes closed, so it's really exciting seeing the attendees have their aha moments. What is the main takeaway you would like students to leave with? I really like to challenge students to get out of their comfort zone. Trying a new technique can be scary and takes time to master. But these techniques elevate the skill set to another level, which makes your work stand out and gets you noticed. Ultimately, these students are more fi nancially successful because they're delivering something clients want in an effi cient way, which maximizes the artists' time, schedule and profi tability. What advice would you give to artists considering your class? My advice is to come with an open mind and challenge yourself to practice the techniques after the class. George Papanikolas The Los Angeles Chargers cheerleaders got the VIP treatment during their swimsuit calendar shoot, which took place at the iconic Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles. Oribe educator and renowned stylist Louis Orozco worked his magic on the ladies over the course of five days. "It was an honor for my team and I to do the onsite styling for the Charger Girls swimsuit calendar," he says. "They're an incredible group of beautiful, hardworking women and we're thrilled to be partnering with them." The calendar unveiling party—where the women found out what month they would be featured in—took place on the Roosevelt rooftop. Proceeds from calendar sales will go to GlobalGiving, a crowd-funding community that connects nonprofits and donors across the world. "We focus on how to layer Oribe products in order to create multiple textures," says Hoang. "The stylists also learn new techniques for building waves and enhancing curls and experiment with transitioning those textures into multiple looks." Stylists watched as Hoang shared the season's most buzzworthy 'dos, like "b roken waves," curls and iconic '90s looks, before they got the chance to recreate the looks themselves. "We chose two styles from the season that could easily be translated from runway to salon— the ethereal, whimsical look from Cinq à Sept and the braided, editorial look from Chromat," Hoang explains. The eight-hour course ended with a photo shoot of the students' work.
