30 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JANUARY 2018 Live & Learn/ Head of the Class As director of education, ColorProof Evolved Color Care's Mary Wilson leads the line's robust learning department. —FRANCESCA MOISIN Wilson's WISDOM T he scent was what fi rst drew Mary Wilson, ColorProof Evolved Color Care (@colorproofhair) director of education, into the beauty industry. "My mom was a hairdresser, and I always loved the beauty salon smells when I'd visit her at work," she recalls. "I decided at age seven that this would likewise be my career." At 19 she graduated from Capri College: Beauty, Cosmetology & Massage School in Cedar Rapids, IA, then worked as a recruiter and educator for her alma mater until moving to California three years later. It was there that the burgeoning master scored her fi rst corporate gig with L'ANZA—despite a few fi rst-meeting snafus. "I was 30 minutes late because those were the days before electronic navigation, and I had to borrow money from the person who interviewed me because I needed gas and didn't have my ATM card," Wilson laughs. "I was very lucky to get that job, which I enjoyed doing for the next 10 years." When industry icon Jim Markham launched ColorProof in 2011, Wilson's husband, Phillip, immediately signed on as international creative director. "Since that day, I admired the brand from a close proximity," Wilson reveals. "The integrity of ingredients, incredible product performance, and passion with which the educators operate set this line apart." She joined in March 2017 and has since been responsible for planning shows and events, managing instructor training programs and developing the lineup of academic offerings. She's also contributed several unique additions, like weekly Facebook Live segments for educators looking to improve personal presentation styles, and the creation of a Facebook group that provides exclusive content and contests to more than 2,500 ColorProof-certifi ed brand advocates. The curriculum itself is multifaceted, presenting everything from trend-based styling classes to those that showcase ColorProof's wide range of products, plus tips on how to use them for optimal results. Yet two courses offered through March pop in the pro's mind as especially exciting. "Style to the Fullest" teaches the arts of blowout and backcombing to craft sky-high height; and "Go Long" demos today's hottest 'dos, including bohemian-crimped curls and waist-length waves for clients hooked on mermaid locks. "Learn as much as you can, as often as you can," urges Wilson. "And join groups to stay connected with the brands you love." What: Learn more about ColorPro of's instructional program at colorproof.com. Where: Courses are held in salons and at distributor training centers around the country. How: To sign up, contact a local ColorProof distributor. Need To Know "Ongoing education is important because our industry, like fashion, is ever- changing, and what was popular when stylists were at school won't necessarily be what they're asked to execute in the salon." —MARY WILSON ColorProof Evolved Color Care founder Jim Markham joins Mary Wilson onstage at a training seminar in Irvine, CA.
