Live & Learn/ Learning Curve T hey say life is about the journey, but this January 28 to 31, it's all about Destination—the Matrix (@matrix) annual educational extravaganza splashing into Orlando, FL. Designed to enlighten, inspire and educate, Destination is billed as "the largest hands-on event in the history of the industry" with 2,000- plus stylists connecting with and learning from award-winning industry innovators. "Matrix is known for its hands-on approach to learning and has touched thousands of hairdressers in their local communities," notes Donna Mann, Matrix education director. "But at Destination, stylists have the opportunity to meet and participate with artists from all around the world in classrooms that deliver exciting hands-on education to elevate their skill levels." Hence, stylists should expect an ambitious schedule that nonetheless balances business with pleasure: After an opening night show and kickoff party, build star- worthy skills with six hands-on classes, four business-boosting courses, and four elective hands-on classes held in smaller group settings. (Extra credit: Main stage presentations host artistic directors' analysis of global trends and Tabatha Coffey's much-anticipated Elevate the Salon Experience, complete with Q&A.) Hands-on students can delve into advanced color, advanced cutting, styling, men's cutting, creative color and social media; business classes focus on salon profi tability, success, coaching and design; and electives cover topics from international trends and color placement to trend forecasting and empowering how-tos in Spanish. "Attendees can expect to walk away with the most requested coloring and cutting techniques, which they can immediately implement when they return to the salon," Mann explains. "But it's also important to offer business classes that help provide resources for salon owners." And from Coffey and George Papanikolas to Nicholas French and Nick Stenson, the hosting education team is primed to instill stylist success. Collectively, artists featured at Destination have garnered a whopping 61 North American Hairstyling Awards nominations and 13 wins. "The skills learned will empower stylists along their personal journey to help them grow, share and inspire, so we can build a brighter future together," Mann concludes. "It's a perfect reciprocal experience: The best learn from the best while building a strong community that unites, inspires and elevates."
