VICTOR VIRGILE/GAMMA-RAPHO VIA GETTY IMAGES 22 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | NOVEMBER 2017 Trendsetters/ Runway Report A t the Leanne Marshall show, a game of "gather and release" is afoot on the backs of models' heads. Copious rubber elastics create a network of hair ties and twists—a visual feast both up-close and from across a room. "We're taking rubber bands, attaching them and then pulling the hair apart a little bit," explains lead stylist Jon Reyman, who's working with Aveda and Olivia Garden to achieve the enchanting look. To begin this latticework style, Reyman pumps hair full of Aveda Thickening Tonic or Pure Abundance Style-Prep (@aveda) to beef up volume at the roots for supportive lift beneath the design. "This gives the hair a little bit of texture, too, for easier styling," Reyman says. He draws a strong center part, making it "very shiny and wet" as a juxtaposition to the frothy loops he's about to construct. Then, starting at the crown and using the Olivia Garden Style-Up Combo Folding Teasing Brush (@oliviagardenint) as a separating tool, he gathers random sections of hair, affi xing each with a rubber elastic. From here, Reyman weaves his web down to the nape, using a technique that looks complex, but he swears is easy to master: dividing each rubber banded section in two, then joining each half with neighboring sections via rubber band. Again and again, this action is taken, until he reaches the base of the neck where he gathers all of the hair together into one fat ponytail, its lengths peppered with more rubber elastics. "After we gather all of the sections in a ponytail, we go back in to pull [the joined sections] apart a bit," Reyman says. This release technique is what really creates the desired effect: "a very angelic, ethereal feel." With rubber elastics as his glue, Jon Reyman fabricates a hairstyle worthy of viral adoration. —KLF The Webs He Weaves Webby Awards A network of webbed hair combines architectural aesthetics with ethereal beauty. Hero Product The Olivia Garden Style- Up Combo Folding Teasing Brush helps separate webbed sections quickly and effi ciently.
