ALTUZARRA, CHANEL, ELIE SAAB: ANDREEA ANGELESCU; TOGA: IMAXTREE.COM 24 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | NOVEMBER 2017 Trendsetters/ Runway Report From encrusted headbands to jeweled barrettes, pearls make a statement on ladylike hair adornments this season. —KLF PEARL POWER W hen Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring is a beauty reference, the next logical step would be to crown hair with headbands brandishing pearls, no? That's just what hair lead Odile Gilbert did at the Altuzarra fall/winter 2017 show, but rather than send out a tribe of identical clones, Gilbert topped her low- slung ponytails with a range of custom headbands: Some girls wore fuzzy fur bands featuring dangling tear-drop pearls, while others slid on red or black velvet bands sprouting uniform round pearls along their crest. In fact, pearls became the choice jewel for runway hairdressers, dripping from thick cloth bands at Chanel and mottling fi ligree gold headdresses at Elie Saab. Even when pearls played a supporting role as one of countless brooch-style barrettes haphazardly placed atop models' pates at the Toga show, their cool, measured elegance outshone even the fl ashiest of rhinestones. For clients who wish to clutch pearls—in their tresses, that is—you'll need to create a little imbalance to keep the style from feeling too prim and proper. Choose unpolished textures (think gritty, second-day hair) and loose silhouettes (like soft waves or an unfussy ponytail) to give a little edge to these ladylike hair gems.
