ALEXANDER MCQUEEN: COURTESY OF REDKEN; ANDREEA ANGELESCU (4) 30 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | OCTOBER 2017 Trendsetters/ Runway Report Ears play peekaboo in a spectrum of styles. —KLF LOBE EXPOSURE W hen the edge of an ear pushes through hair, the overall style changes. The entire profi le morphs, and the effect can be slight or immense. In the realm of romance, where Rapunzel-like waves cascade down the back (seen at Alexander McQueen), the glimpse of a lobe evokes a semblance of innocence—you can almost envision the wearer gingerly pushing her coils behind her ear as a form of distraction against evildoers. On the opposite end of the spectrum, rough- and-tumble hairdos outfi tted for punk types (as seen at Versus Versace) take a tomboy turn when earlobes pop into view; it makes the style feel like an afterthought, as though the woman could only be bothered to half-tuck the hair that's messing with her vibe while she leaves the rest to drape protectively over her face. Even a schoolgirl side pony (seen at J.W. Anderson) becomes more charming when an ear pokes through the tightly tied tail; it's a detail that shouldn't be there, but seems all the more delightful now that it is. How do you harness the ear as your next best hair accessory? If you're looking to build up the drama, draw a larger slice of hair in front of the ear while tucking the remainder behind. For a chic lazy-girl look, after pushing hair behind the ear, tug a few strands loose for an unkempt effect. MARNI JOHN GALLIANO J.W. ANDERSON VERSUS VERSACE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
