96 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | SEPTEMBER 2017 News Rebecca Taylor, creative colorist, Redken What are you most excited about in your new role? I'm excited to partner with such a respected and progressive brand. I want to lend my expertise in creative color to help share techniques with Redken artists and other stylists, and improve on an already amazing line. How has your experience up to this point helped prepare you for your new position? I have almost obsessively focused on fashion color as my specialty for the last 13 years. I've been talking clients and models into getting this type of color way before it became as commercially on trend as it is now. I have researched everything I could fi nd on the topic—the correct way to lighten and prime hair, the way the hair physically absorbs direct dye, shifting tones, underlying pigment, how color fades, how to maintain it at home, and how to remove or neutralize the color when the time comes for the client to return to a natural color. As a full-time educator and creative colorist for Redken, I feel it's my responsibility to share everything I can with stylists to empower them and build their color business. What's the key to a successful consultation concerning fashion color? The fi rst step to a great consultation is to inform clients about the fashion color "philosophy." They need to know it's imperative to lighten hair safely to a certain level in order to achieve many tones. It's also very important as a stylist that you be assertive and honest with what you're able to achieve. If you get clients excited about the fashion color process and explain that it's a journey, they will be more likely to enjoy the different tones along the way to achieving their end result. For instance, if their end goal is silver or lilac and you're not able to remove enough warmth in one sitting, suggest they go with a peach, pink or rose gold until their hair is healthy enough for another round of lightening. It's also important to remind clients that their bold shades will fade over time, but will be beautiful during every stage. You need to inform your clients every step of the way. Describe your perfect night. A perfect night would be traveling to a new place with either my partner, Chris, and/or friends, having an adult beverage or two, dancing, singing, and living life to the fullest. I work hard so I can play hard. Life is too short! Frank Deninno, director of North American education for Avena Beauty and Interfashion USA, Deninno Flash System What are you most excited about for the Deninno Flash System? I'm most excited about the opportunity to give hairdressers everywhere an option when it comes to highlights, balayage and streaks. All hairdressers have their own technique, but the most important factor for all of us is being able to control the process so that we can better understand and manage the outcome. In addition to this, the Deninno Flash System allows hairdressers to achieve a very natural look when processing the hair. I like to think that I've helped hairdressers eliminate the guesswork that comes with processing, as well as helped them to achieve a beautiful and consistent way to highlight and streak hair—all without inhibiting individual creativity. Can you tell us about the Deninno Flash Comb and Flash Velcro Systems? The Deninno Flash Comb and Flash Velcro Systems are comprised of an acrylic comb, plastic strips and velcro patches that can all be used for different hair processing techniques. The clear plastic strips allow hairdressers to control color (because you can actually see through the strips) while adding humidity to the hair and process, thus protecting the hair during chemical procedures. The plastic strips are also reusable! The comb itself allows hairdressers to weave the hair and color all while achieving a very natural look. The Velcro patches also minimize some of the damage associated with balayage. What's your favorite comfort food? I'm Italian so I'm biased! Give me a nice plate of pasta with fresh tomato sauce and I'm happy. GETTING TO KNOW YOU COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS; TOP, RIGHT: EMILIE BRANCH A beauty coach gets you through the unexpected.
