This year, Milady (@miladypro) joins the short list of still-trucking nonagenarians as it celebrates 90 years of cutting- edge cosmetology education. It all started with a then- revolutionary idea in 1927 by founder Nicholas F. Cimaglia: to have a consistent and accessible curriculum across all states. "Nick Cimaglia began this business selling training manuals out of the backseat of his car," recounts Sandra Bruce, general manager. "He had an unwavering passion for this industry and a tireless work ethic." Since its 1938 publishing, millions of industry hopefuls have used the company's fl agship title, Milady Standard Cosmetology (now on its 13th edition), to hone their skills and pass state board exams, and Milady's curriculum is used by 90 percent-plus of U.S. academic programs today. But it's not all textbook talk for this educational behemoth; the company sold to an academic publisher 30 years ago, with Milady steadily growing and covering every corner of the industry. Its fi rst online course in 1999 evolved into the groundbreaking MindTap in 2015, while the 2013 intro of MiladyPro delivered web-based resources for existing pros to improve. "We're very proud of the role we play in this industry," notes Gerard McAvey, senior director of sales and marketing. "It may not be sexy, but we offer the best of the best in education, and education leads to success." Accordingly, to celebrate nine decades, Milady is honoring longtime supporters at all levels: instructors (footing the bill for the fi rst 90 registrants at this year's annual Career Educators Alliance Conference); students and stylists (extending 90 days of free access to its online Advanced Academy at miladypro.com); and school owners (sponsoring a soiree at this year's American Association of Cosmetology Schools Annual Convention, with proceeds benefi ting the organization's government relations efforts). "90 years later, my team and I continue to do our best to live up to Nick's legacy and develop only educational resources that we can be proud of," Bruce muses.
