56 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | SEPTEMBER 2017 Live & Learn/ Head of the Class Over the past fi ve years, Stephen Moody has stamped Wella Professionals' curriculum with his lifelong educator's perspective to catapult the careers of stylists. —TM S tephen Moody, global education academy dean for Wella Professionals (@wellahair), was literally born into the industry; his mother gave birth in a bedroom above her small-town northern England salon. Witnessing fi rsthand the workings of the biz, he knew he'd pursue the family trade, but when his mother became an early adapter of Vidal Sassoon education, he instinctively gravitated toward teaching. After a Sassoon apprenticeship in London, Moody steadily built his own salon clientele but leapt at the chance to work at its academy and travel worldwide, before relocating to the States in 1987 to straighten its then- struggling North American locations. "When I left Sassoon after 32 years, I knew I wanted to stay in education," Moody recalls. "I realized that my whole career I'd had a wonderful relationship with Wella and didn't want to work for anyone else." Clearly, the new partnership clicked. In just fi ve years with the company, Moody has shaken up the system, introducing Stage Craft for Wella educators, which encourages them to relate to today's up-and-coming generations, helping students retain info, and score creative and fi nancial success. Then, upon the launch of the EIMI styling range, Moody whipped up Cut Craft, a four-day cutting and styling program designed for color-wielding Wella devotees. "They love how it connects cut with color and vice versa," Moody enthuses. "Our last session at the new Studio Atelier in Chicago sold out in 48 hours!" But the latest showpiece in Moody's insightful approach has been Triple Craft, inspired after his extensive globe- trotting revealed a key concern: Stylists around the world were losing clients to at-home solutions. (The titular trifecta refers to attracting new interest by pulling together cut, color and fi nishing to fi t clients' lifestyles.) These smash-success sessions gather 150 stylists for lessons on winning back clients through new consultation tactics and behind-the-chair techniques, after which 16 students stay for two days of hands-on cut and color, culminating in a professional photo shoot done with real women (not models) sporting a bevy of "before" looks and textures. "The key word is 'transformation,' and what I'm about is real hair on real people," Moody explains. "Our approach has proven really successful; we think it's the future of education." Triple Threat Save the Date Mark your calendars to experience Wella's career- changing education.
