If so, you might want to consider incorporating Feng Shui into your salon. Developed thousands of years ago in China, Feng Shui is the ancient art of correct placement that focuses on the arrangement of furnishings and decor in order to attract harmony, good health and other benefi ts into one's life. "People are the greatest conduits of energy," says Melissa Yamaguchi, salon owner, energy therapist and Feng Shui educator. "In the salon world, we may be offering services and selling products to enhance one's beauty, but make no mistake about it, we are in the people business. As soon as we approach business from that standpoint and understand our energy, we will have increased our chances for success." Here, salon owners who have incorporated Feng Shui into their studios share advice for improving business. TAP GOOD LIGHTING. Light is one of the basic principles of Feng Shui and is used to balance energy, so it's important that you choose the right type for your salon. During the recent remodel of RamosCarreon Salon (formerly known as Estilo Salon) in Los Angeles, owners Philip Carreon and Robert Ramos transformed the space to give it a super-modern feel with dynamic light and energy fl ow. "A room that is energetic with lots of true light creates a positive mood," remarks Carreon. DECORATE WITH WATER. Water is directly related to the fl ow of money and career in Feng Shui. Incorporate this element into your salon via a fountain, fi sh tank or artwork that depicts water. "I brought in a Feng Shui expert who immediately told me to put a water photo on the right side of my stairs because too much of my money was going to the left and out the door," says Kazumi Morton, owner of Kazumi Morton Salon in Beverly Hills, California. "I brought in a huge framed artwork of water, and everything has been going smoothly since!" ADD CRYSTALS. Crystals are used to clear spaces of negative energy and attract specifi c properties such as protection, love and health. "I hang a crystal in the back of my studio to keep good energy in while negative energy goes out," says Marco Pelusi, owner of Marco Pelusi Hair Studio in West Hollywood, California. ARRANGE ACCORDINGLY. Furniture placement and organization enhance well- being, ensure harmony and invite good fortune, while clutter drains energy and can slow down creativity and progress. "I designed the salon to eliminate clutter, with all tools, cords and supplies neatly tucked at each station," says Sam DiVine, owner of Society Salon in West Hollywood, California. "We have the front desk clear and center when you walk into the space, in a commanding position to ensure that our backs are never to the door." In Feng Shui, having your back to the door not only invites others to take advantage of you, but you are also turning your back to possible opportunities. Duly noted! SHOWCASE PERSONAL ITEMS. When arranging your salon, include meaningful items that you have a special connection with in order to create more positive energy. "I purchased the Buddha I have in my salon 12 years ago," says Matthew Preece, owner of Matthew Preece Salon in Santa Monica, California. "After I fi rst saw it, I couldn't stop thinking about it; I felt this Buddha was calling to me." The Buddha has a prominent role in the salon's reception area for all to see, and represents compassion and wisdom. "I think it's important to have symbols of peace and compassion around you as a reminder of how connected we all are," remarks Preece. Philip Carreon Kazumi Morton Matthew Preece Sam DiVine Society Salon features clean, minimalist decor. Water is an important element in Feng Shui. Buddhas bring peace and serenity to a space.
