L'Oréal Professionnel predicts rough texture merged with miniscule braids in their cards. —KARIE L. FROST I f your client has ever felt intrigued by a sidewalk psychic's promises, she may be amiable to designer Nicole Miller's inspiration for fall/winter 2017: a downtown girl who dabbles in tarot card readings before partaking in evenings fi lled with dancing, drinking and whatever else the predictions foretell. "She's 'gypsy grunge,'" says L'Oréal Professionnel lead Pepper Pastor of the mystical-minded muse. "Think of New York's underground and St. Mark's Place during the '80s and '90s. There's a little bit of darkness to this inspiration." To capture this gritty, dark beauty, Pastor layers L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Wild Stylers Crêpage de Chignon and Next Day Hair (@lorealpro) to "give an extreme texture, but it won't go too matte," she explains. "We're layering the products in the hair based on the models' texture as well as hair color." She then weaves thick braids throughout the entire head and presses each with a fl at iron to bake in relaxed bends. After releasing the plaits, Pastor goes back through the newly bent lengths with a 1-inch curling wand, wrapping random pieces of hair around the barrel in alternating directions to conjure more lived-in texture. As a gypsy-esque fi nal touch, Pastor knits a few tiny braids in the back and around the ears that peek through the tangle of texture. "The idea is her hair was pretty when she left the house at 8 a.m. and now it's 3 a.m.," she laughs. "I love the combination of unfi nished waves and braids. I think they're two looks we see [on their own] often, but when they're together, it's truly unique."
