Seeing the look in someone's eyes when the metaphorical light bulb turns on, and how a balayage paintbrush can transform their career, is the spark that keeps my battery charged. CT : PARI S H K O HANIM ; S UNLI G HT S M O DEL: ALLIE HINE ; G ETTY IMA G E S (2) YA GE I challenge myself every day to remain graceful, elegant and respectful of others in light of the men and women who look to me as their muse.Ó Shaw poses with students after teaching a class. Gorgeous color courtesy of Sunlights Balayage IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY My uncle Don Shaw, who was Intercoiffure's artistic director for 23 years, used to say, "You are only as good as the girl you shoot." Spend time studying faces and expressions of models. Clothes, hair, makeup and photography are all important, but ultimately it's the model that makes you shine. Also, make sure to minimize the number of people you have on set. Too many opinions can distract from your artistry and cause you to doubt your own work. SUNLIGHTS BALAYAGE FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT CANDY SHAW UNDER THE SUN My favorite product is Sunlights Professionnel Balayage Lightener. Not only does the lightener perform optimally for me as a balayage artist, but it also has been a catalyst for unity and change. Never in a million years would I have thought that something as simple as a lightener could bring thousands of people together and create a new category for hairdressing. It's more than a product that simply highlights hair—it's a product that changes lives! KNOWLEDGE IS POWER Stylists frequently burn out because their creative fl ow becomes robotic. Stay a student! It's as simple as that. When you're "green" you grow and when you think you're "ripe" you will rot. You must surround yourself with knowledge and listen with the intent to learn. Money should not be the motivator. If you focus only on money then you will fi nd yourself resentful. When you're an artist, learning gives you a purpose. Once purpose and passion meet, money is abundant. BAG OF TRICKS I'm dyslexic so it's natural for me to begin with the end in mind and then work backward toward the beginning. Visualize your results and build your story from there. However, make sure to always have a few tricks up your sleeve in case your plan doesn't quite go as intended. It's always better to have the trick and not need it than to need it and not have it! Sunlights Balayage founder and president Candy Shaw chats with Launchpad's Jasmine Coreas about education, family and always keeping a trick up your sleeve.
