52 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2017 Live & Learn/ Learning Curve COURTESY OF WENDY BOND Two Lakmé courses, Color Contouring and Corrective Coloring Solutions, teach stylists the how-tos behind wow-worthy hues. —TM The Color Code T he most amazing hue transformers in our industry demonstrate that color isn't merely a technique; it's an art form. And few have dedicated their careers to color like Wendy Bond, national director of education for Lakmé (@lakmeusa)—making her the ideal educator for leading the company's Color Contouring course. The instruction promises stylists "the ability to improve every single-process color" they perform, infusing extra dimension sans added treatment time. Bond teaches techniques to create game-changing brightness or depth via a single- process formulation by smartly placing different colors throughout hair or through savvy surface application. (Bonus: Shades grow out seamlessly and can be easily switched at the next appointment.) "When I teach, I want it to be something that people can really use and enjoy," Bond explains. "Color contouring isn't balayage, block coloring or using foil to apply color to a part of the head; you're treating the head as three-dimensional rather than fl at, giving you really cool placement that moves with the hair." During Corrective Coloring Solutions, Bond fi xes hot-mess hair color on four live models. Expect precise, technical corrective color from start to fi nish with interactive participation from students, who consult the work every step of the way. Bond's No. 1 lesson for stylists: Think bite-size instead of big picture, reevaluate, adjust your plan and apply accordingly at every turn for a better outcome. "It's a great learning experience," Bond enthuses. "You're seeing things you're afraid to do, things you'd never do, or what happens when the plan doesn't go right." Best of all, both lessons are suited for any stylist at any level, working with any color line, since most principles can be applied to any product—and for any client, covering different textures and shapes of hair. "A lot of classes are about color theory or creative theory, but Color Contouring is placement-driven and creatively driven," Bond notes. "Same with Corrective Coloring—you're trying to enhance or control, and we fi nd the best tool for the job. When it comes to color, little things can really help!" A student hard at work in Lakmé's Color Contouring class taught by Wendy Bond! Wendy Bond teaches these courses three to four times per year at DePasquale Salon Systems in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and is training other educators to instruct in-salon.
