T hose who are familiar with UNITE CEO and founder Andrew Dale know that he is a longtime proponent of dog rescue. In fact, Dale and his wife share their home with three rescue pit bulls! So it was no surprise when UNITE (@unite_hair) released Doggy 'Poo—a specially formulated pet shampoo designed to meet our four- legged friends' skin and fur needs. What many people might not know, however, is that a generous 90 percent of proceeds from the sales of Doggy 'Poo benefi ts animal advocacy groups. Among these groups is Shelter to Soldier (STS), a nonprofi t organization that pairs post-9/11 combat veterans with trained psychiatric service dogs. The goal of STS is to help soldiers overcome Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and other obstacles that occur after serving in combat zones. UNITE is also sponsoring Jax, one of the program's dogs. "We're following his journey from the shelter, through training, to his eventual partnership with a deserving veteran," explains Dale. "The entire UNITE family is excited about this process." Graham Bloem, STS cofounder, president and training director, couldn't be happier about his organization's partnership with the haircare company. "When I received the phone call from UNITE about their interest in supporting our mission at Shelter to Soldier, I was honored and excited," Bloem shares. "They adore dogs, they love helping those in need, and when we shared our mission they seemed just as excited as we were. Receiving a percentage of sales on a product isn't uncommon, but to receive 45 percent out of the total 90 percent of Doggy 'Poo sales [the other 45 percent of sales goes to the San Diego Humane Society] is truly remarkable. When their team says 'UNITE family' they mean it, and our charity is extremely happy to have their sponsorship and support." 42 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2017 Live & Learn/ Giving Back UNITE demonstrates its commitment to veterans and animal advocacy through a very special partnership. —LINDA KOSSOFF COURTESY OF UNITE DOUBLE DUTY Thousands of veterans and soldiers currently struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and other forms of post-combat psychological damage. Tragically, it's estimated that a U.S. veteran commits suicide every 6 minutes. At the same time, 3,200 innocent dogs are euthanized every day around the world. The Shelter to Soldier (STS) program is based on the understanding that sometimes the best way to help those in need is to bring them together. To that end, STS visits animal shelters, fi nds dogs with the temperament to become dedicated service pets, adopts them and provides the care and training needed to ultimately pair them with veterans. By bringing together aff ected veterans and at-risk dogs, STS has improved and saved hundreds of lives. Each service dog/veteran team costs the program $12,000, so the organization relies on sponsorships and other donations to keep going.
