106 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2017 Kelly Wensman, Global Innovation Director, Macadamia Beauty What are you most excited about in your new role? I've been keeping my eye on Macadamia Beauty (including éprouvage and Macadamia Professional) for many years now professionally, and personally I have been purchasing several products (my daily go-to before joining the team was the Blow Dry Lotion). Knowing that I would also be able to work on the Flawless by Gabrielle Union line, I was thrilled to create care and styling products that offer solutions for all hair types and textures. What does innovation mean to you? Innovation is traveling down unlikely roads in search of unique destinations. It's quenching the demands of consumers that have not yet found a solution. It's throwing out 10 really wacky ideas knowing that only three will be viable to develop, only two may get developed, and only one is an award-winning blockbuster. Innovation is preparing and offering the perfect pitch for your marketing team to knock it out of the park. Macadamia Professional has so many luscious masks and oils that I'm eager to take to innovative new levels. What's your favorite vacation destination? I don't have a favorite because I love to explore new places and not go somewhere I've already been. After visiting Hawaii recently to celebrate my father's retirement, I realized that vacation is truly a state of mind. If you can get to that state without sitting on a plane or paying for a premium buffet breakfast, then you're on the right path. All of my best vacation memories from childhood to motherhood involve laughing with loved ones, being in nature and spending signifi cant time away from the work that brings you a paycheck. GETTING TO KNOW YOU Meet the industry's movers and shakers. Sam Villa, Global Artistic Ambassador, Redken What are you most excited about in your new role? I am genuinely excited to work closer with Redken marketing! As an online spokesperson, I will be working with the Product Launch Program, as well as on Sam's Corner with the new Redken Break Room, which is all about tips and techniques for the salon professional. I'll also be contributing to @redken on Instagram with hacks and tricks, and working with Redken social media on interviews, product write-ups and VIP press events. Most importantly, I am excited about having the opportunity to share knowledge with an even broader reach. What inspires you? I'm constantly asked where my inspiration comes from and it's always the most interesting and diffi cult question to answer because it changes constantly as things around me change: people, sights and sounds. I'm a very sensory person so it's important that I'm present and observant of my surroundings. There are often cool, creative inspirations right in front of me. I'm inspired by the digital world at the moment including Pinterest, YouTube, fashion websites—I'm constantly researching! I believe that as a teacher I must never stop learning. What do you do when you're not working? I take myself out of the game by playing golf and fi shing. I love one-on-one time with nature; and of course, quality time with my wife, Lisa, and son, Mateo. News COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS; GETTY IMAGES (2) At Hair Play International, hosted by Goldwell and KMS at NYC's neoclassical Gotham Hall, more than 500 lucky guests glimpsed seriously cool rocker-inspired styles (think Janis Joplin and Kurt Cobain, amongst others!); the latest trending haircolors (such as antique rose and periwinkle); fresh cutting techniques and contemporary styling tips.
