MAY 2017 | beautylaunchpad.com | 83 Playful Pastel For those wanting to stick to softer colors in the spirit of spring, a pastel mermaid melt is the perfect variation of the current trend. "When I color melt, I do my base fi rst by taking diagonal sections," says Olesia Vabishchevich, an international trainer for John Paul Mitchell Systems (@paulmitchellus). "From there, each section is a different pastel shade, alternating colors. I then blend going in an upward direction, so it's a nice, natural transition and blends all the way to the top." She avoids working from the top to bottom because that makes the base go too low. Her preferred direction to start is in the front left, followed by the front right, then ending in the back. Check out her formula for achieving the perfect Pastel Mermaid Melt: 1 Pre-lighten hair to platinum. My go-to is Paul Mitchell's Dual-Purpose Lightener with 20-volume developer. Keep an eye on your blondes until you get to your desired level of lift. If there are any unwanted tones left after you lighten, keep toning until you get a pure white or else it will affect the end result. 2 Toning Formula: Equal parts Paul Mitchell the color Ultra Toner Platinum Blonde (UTP) + Ultra Toner Ash Blonde (UTA) with a touch of Ultra Toner Natural Blonde (UTNB) + 5-volume developer. Keep an eye on it until it becomes the perfect white blonde. 3 Wash, then condition hair using Awapuhi Wild Ginger Keratin Intensive Treatment. Rinse and blow- dry completely. 4 Apply Paul Mitchell's newest semipermanent line of cream hair color, POP XG Pastel Shades, to dried hair and process for 25 minutes. The line has 18 shades and fi ve new pastels, offering soft, creamy tones for lasting tonality. It is pre-mixed and does not require mixing with developer. 5 POP XG pastel shades are applied to dried hair and processed for 25 minutes. CHARISMATIC COLORS ColorDesign (@colordesignhair) Fun&Glam; comes in 10 fashion-forward direct dye shades including Mystic Blue and Candy Pink—making it easy to achieve multiple mermaid colors for your client. MIX AND MATCH For those looking to create the perfect mermaid-inspired look, AGEBeautiful (@zotosprofessional) has a brand new collection of blue-green shades that are versatile and can be mixed with other hues in the palette. "I love mermaid color melts," says Mike Petrizzi, AGEbeautiful artistic director. "This technique is really fl exible and can be used with not only different colors, but playing with the opacity of one shade. I've been having fun starting off with one shade and then adding clear as I progress down the hair lengths, creating a lighter, pastel effect as it moves down the hair."
