Malibu C's Missy Peterson muses on the power of making choices and the importance of continued education. Missy-ing Link Live & Learn/ POV S uccess isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fi re." With that quote by Arnold H. Glasow, I set my mantra for 2017—but, in truth, it's how I've lived my life for a long time. From the moment I decided to embark on a career in the hair and beauty industry, I was clear about making specifi c professional choices. I grew up in Indianapolis as the oldest child in an average Midwestern family. My fi rst job was at a retirement village working in the dining room as a server for its residents. Ironically, that experience opened a door to my future, when my mom scored a stylist position at the center's in- house salon, which she ended up owning several years later. Watching her at work inspired me to attend cosmetology school. After completing my undergraduate study at Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis, I obtained my license from Hair Fashions by Kaye Beauty College. I'm an accredited member of the American Board of Certifi ed Haircolorists, so I wanted to educate for a color company. My sales rep suggested I check out Malibu C, and in confusion I asked, "Why? They're not a dye brand." He said, "You're right, they're so much more." Those words struck and stuck. I fi rst joined the Malibu C team as a full- time sales education manager, and now, four years later, I'm the global creative director, focusing my energy on furthering our group's artistic endeavors. I still live in Indianapolis, and while every day is different, each morning starts with some form of quiet meditation, followed by breakfast with my husband Jeff and our three kids. Next, I might head to the offi ce to convene with other team leaders, or if I'm on the road, my efforts center on continued education initiatives. Ongoing technological advancements mean our industry is constantly evolving, so acquiring information to master new skills has never been more imperative. It's also such an exciting time for stylists. Whereas in the past, education was driven exclusively by manufacturers, in today's digital age, tress masters can employ social media as a vehicle for acquiring or spreading instant knowledge. One last nugget of advice to which I've always adhered, spoken by the great Pablo Picasso: "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist." —As told to Francesca Moisin COURTESY OF MALIBU C; BOTTOM, RIGHT: GETTY IMAGES MISSY FILLS IN THE BLANKS To relax I have cookouts with my family, which are inevitably fi lled with laughter and fun. This summer will be about custom chroma for every client, as colorists push the boundaries of what's creatively possible. I admire Sonya Dove, who is both talented and humble, and Geno Stampora, who taught me how to own my work. 40 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2017 MISSY PETERSON Malibu C not only has dyes, but also products to protect your pigments!
