36 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2017 CRAZY IN LOVE I love Beyoncé! Her music is a great backdrop when I work. Whether I'm feeling happy, sad or in the mood to jam— she has all of my moods covered! She's a powerful entertainer who is all about empowering women, and that is very much aligned with my work! —MO Turn your mistakes into learning experiences. We all make mistakes throughout our career; it takes 20 years or so to become an 'overnight success.' " —DOT JCPenney Salon's artistic directors, Michelle O'Connor and Dilek Onur-Taylor, chat with assistant editor Jasmine Coreas about inspiration, making mistakes and getting the perfect shot. If you don't know where to start, start somewhere—no one knows that you haven't done a photo shoot before. —Dilek Onur-Taylor STAYING CLASSIC The 1940s was an era of war and as women were thrust into the workforce, longer hair became a hazard when working in a factory, farm or with machinery. This is where all the pin curls, victory rolls and waves came into being. As a curly haired woman, I am drawn to the idea of adding curls and form to hair in order to create shape! —MO e m o y H d r o Whe py o ch y S T th w T c d o H er music op e t h er y , h S T t w T c o JCPenney Salon's artistic directors: Dilek Onur-Taylor and Michelle O'Connor FINE-TUNING To ensure an effective photo, take a step back and look at the silhouette. The camera always notices shape fi rst, so make sure to fi nd a desired outline or shape before working on the fi ne-tuning of the interior. —Michelle O'Connor THE BIG PICTURE I take in everything around me for inspiration. I'm always present. I collect and take pictures and try to pinpoint exactly what is drawing me to it. I like looking at all of the images collectively, and then start building the bigger picture. I make garbage before I ever make anything beautiful. —MO WHEN IN PARIS Paris is my favorite city in the world for all the obvious reasons: fashion, beauty, architecture, French bread, crepes, and my all-time favorite—champagne. —DOT Michelle O'Connor channels inspiration from iconic 1940s looks.
