90 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | APRIL 2017 News ANDY GETS PERSONAL Earlier this week, beauty editors in New York City were treated to a luxurious Wella Professionals Oil Refl ections blowout with brand celebrity ambassador Andy LeCompte. While getting primped by the hair maestro, Launchpad scored the scoop on why he loves Oil Refl ections, some of his favorite celebrity styles, and what inspired him to pursue his dreams to become a celebrity stylist. Read on to get the lowdown. —MOLLY CHURCH Launchpad: Tell us a little bit about some of the benefi ts of Wella Professionals Oil Refl ections. LeCompte: Don't you believe good, healthy hair makes you have a good, gorgeous blowout? It all starts in the shower. When you shampoo your hair with good products, it really makes a difference. The line's shampoo is super hydrating, all-around nourishing, and leaves hair feeling soft and healthy. The conditioner is great for daily use and the mask should be used weekly for luminous, smooth locks. When we were on tour, Madonna literally went through three tubs of the mask in a week! Her staff cannot run out of the mask! LP: Any words of wisdom for stylists using the products? LC: I use the oil in everyone's hair as a cutting tool and to get through the tangles. I like hair to look and feel touchable, and that's what oil has always done for me. LP: Any advice on how to retail the Oil Refl ections lineup? LC: We have a great deep conditioning in-salon treatment [Oil Refl ections Luminous Magnifying Elixir] that gives clients 72 hours of shine [and smoothness]. It's a really great way to show people the instant results. You can charge for it but you can also off er it as complimentary service, which I do when I'm running late. I think it's a great way to sell products. Clients will love how their hair feels and then you can tell them they can take products home [that will give them that same feeling]. LP: What are some of your favorite celebrity styles you've created? LC: I love the fake bangs I've done on Penélope Cruz. Penélope is fun because she really likes to go for it on the red carpet. I [also like working with] Nicole Richie because she's daring and a risk-taker. Once I cut Nicole's hair when she had these really long yellow-burgundy extensions—the hair was actually cool at that time—but then her makeover transitioned and turned into something important with her bob, which has been really fun. LP: So you like working with people who are more daring? LC: Yes, it's fun to work with people who like to take risks. Madonna is also a risk-taker. The amount of looks we've created through the years is just incredible! But I also like people who own their style and work it for a period of time and aren't changing their hair every other day. LP: What trends do you see on the horizon? LC: I see people cutting their hair and going short. Wigs have come so far and people are constantly wearing wigs and extensions, so they're willing to go quite short and dramatic. I also see a lot of platinum color happening. LP: Any tips for aspiring stylists? LC: Dream big, be fearless, and take risks. When I started doing hair I was so fearless. I wasn't afraid to take chances. If you believe in it, you can make anything happen. You just have to do it. Launchpad's Molly Church and Wella Professionals' Andy LeCompte dish on the Oil Refl ections line. Destination Education Despite being the dead of winter, things were bright and sunny at the Palm Springs, California home of Matrix artistic director Nicholas French, where the hairstyling guru hosted an exclusive educational event at Skyfall Academy for up-and-coming stylists. Attendees included the 20 winners of a Matrix- sponsored contest that covered the 600 Premium Regis salons in the U.S. and Canada and judged on the highest-quality color services. In addition to some serious bragging rights, the grand prize included this epic two-day Palm Springs weekend and the opportunity for hands-on learning from one of the hair industry's greatest talents. The event kicked off with a cocktail reception at French's stunning mid-century abode (which features a scenic view of the city) and was followed by a full day of education and hair play. Lessons covered everything from elaborately braided updos and retro-inspired deep waves to cutting how-tos and tips on how to better assess a client's needs. "There's lots of information that hairdressers don't know about," says French. "The whole point of these events is for attendees to take the information home with them and apply it to their work." Indeed, the running theme of the weekend revolved around taking a fresh perspective on techniques and looks that have become almost routine. "The number one reason guests leave stylists is because they won't change," explains Michael McDonough, director of education for Matrix. To get their creative juices fl owing, attendees had the opportunity to take what they learned from French and put it into practice. Mannequin heads served as guinea pigs for stylists to primp and play with—as well as put their own spin on things. "When teaching, I always tell stylists to keep records of every haircut and style they do," notes French. "After a week or so, look back at them and think of how you can change and refresh your technique. It's so important for hairdressers to change up their norm and reinvent themselves." —ANGELA MELERO BEST PRACTICE Congratulations to Farouk Systems ! The beloved brand has been honored with a certifi cation by the European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients for Good Manufacturing Practices both overseas and at its Houston facilities. "For the past 30 years, Farouk Systems has successfully manufactured the highest quality products in conjunction with its conscious commitment to the environment and safety of its customers," says founder Farouk Shami.
