APRIL 2017 | beautylaunchpad.com | 85 SEXY HAIR: EMILIE BRANCH; BOTTOM, LEFT: COURTESY OF JOHN PAUL MITCHELL SYSTEMS; COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS Throughout January, John Paul Mitchell Systems embarked on a spring tour for MarulaOil—its new must-have treatment. Touching down in multiple cities ranging from Cincinnati to Honolulu, the team showed stylists across the country how to incorporate the line on all hair types. From a "hands-in" event in the morning to a look and learn workshop in the afternoon, no question was left unanswered. The team also taught attendees a haircut designed exclusively for MarulaOil, as well as styling and fi nishing techniques that expanded artistic creativity. Stylists left the nationwide event versed in the how-tos of MarulaOil, ready to give clients their best looks yet. Making MarulaOil Magic Sexy Hair could not have picked a better movie to align its brand with than Fifty Shades Darker, in which female lead Anastasia Steele's hair gets notably longer as she goes from girl next door to vampy vixen. "Long, luxurious hair has always been labeled sexy," explains Sexy Hair director of communications Sloane LaMartina. "Long hair is sexy in a special kind of way." In the fi lm, the sexier Anastasia gets, the longer her hair becomes. What's the easiest way to cheat waist-length locks? Extensions are becoming the de rigueur go-to. This is a trend that is not going away, LaMartina reassures us: "It's a billion dollar market with 70 million consumers." For Sexy Hair, this defi nitely means business. The brand has created a line specifi cally designed to care for extensions. Jennifer Weiderman, vice president of marketing, explains this amazing new business expansion. "We're here to launch Long Sexy Hair," she says. "The products work on both extensions and naturally long hair." There's no doubt that Sexy Hair has chosen the right ingredients: Moringa oil, the main component of the line, is known for strengthening and nourishing hair, as well as combating split ends. To give attendees the ultimate Anastasia Steele experience while reinforcing their new, game- changing products, Sexy Hair created a one-stop shop for sexiness in the private (and appropriately named) Red Room of the AMC Loews Theatre in New York City. Guests were welcomed to the event by an incredibly buff man in front of a wall of roses, before being ushered toward an extensions bar. From there, attendees were given eyelash extensions and a makeup application that emphasized a smoldering dark burgundy lip, completing their transition to sex goddesses. Guests were also served cocktails and hor d'oeuvres by gratuitously shirtless men—some donning the famous Fifty Shades Darker masquerade mask for an added air of mystique. And since no fi lm viewing is complete without popcorn or candy, Sexy Hair made sure there was a self-serve bar for both, where guests were encouraged to fi ll bags to their heart's content. As if that weren't enough, additional scantily clad servers circled the theater with glasses of champagne and Junior Mints—if only every concession stand looked like this! Guests left the #MySexyHairExperience feeling just like Anastasia—right in time for February's day of love. Sexy Hair partners with Fifty Shades Darker for a very special (and sensual) soiree. Color Code This month, Matrix artistic director Lenny Strand shares how he paints the town with his Programs of Passion color class. Tell us about your class. The name of the class is Kaleidoscope Of Color. We will explore color techniques that support what is currently trending in hair color. What have attendees learned from the class? I like to showcase all of the excellent tools Matrix has to offer and how they make a colorist's life easier. What is your favorite part of teaching the class? Spending time with fellow hairdressers and creating a safe learning zone, as well as a learning environment that has challenges and wins. What is the main takeaway you would like students to leave the class with? That each attendee has the ability and skill to take on any color challenge and succeed. What are classes you would like to teach in the future? I will be launching a social conversation called Technical Talk w/ Lenny. I'll be answering burning color questions, demonstrating tips and tricks, and creating a weekly dialogue with fellow hairdressers. Please stay tuned and look for this launch through social media soon! What advice would you give for stylists considering a Passion class? Simply this: Sign up, show up. Live education is vital to our industry and a way to connect with each other.
