ENTICE. "Spark interest in extensions by displaying merchandise at work stations or salon waiting areas, which also prompts impulse buys," suggests Erin Hayden, master trainer at Hairdreams (@hairdreamsoffi cial). Window decals, posters and TV monitors playing how-to videos further tempt clients to test product. Stylists should set examples by rocking faux locks, as everyone knows that imitation is the sincerest form of fl attery. 48 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | APRIL 2017 COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS Live & Learn/ Quick Tips Fact: Hair extensions are mainstream. Many salons feature them on service menus, as they're beloved by clients of all ethnicities, ages and tress types. Whether opting for a dramatic full-head application or a simple volume, length or color fi x, these tips break down the need-to-know basics. —FRANCESCA MOISIN Extensions: Revisited CONSULT. Initial consultation is key for ideal application. "Get to know your client and her lifestyle so that you may recommend the correct product, color and length," advises Alicia Iannone, artistic director at Hairtalk Extensions (@hairtalkusa). Are changing seasons calling her to make a hue switch? Pull out a color ring for the perfect chroma match. Does she have fi ne hair that requires a volume boost, short bangs longing for length, or overprocessed front angles in need of face- framing balayage? Detailed conversation can address every specifi c need. APPLY. "Always brick lay tape-in extensions," says Sage Nguyen, director of education for HALOCOUTURE (@halocoutureextensions). "Leave a half-inch border around hairlines and apply by angling tape around head contours so clients may still pull manes into ponytails. Don't over-direct strands, as this can cause tension." For today's on-trend fashion colors, fi x one extension on top that matches the natural hair hue, then sandwich in a fashion piece for a gorgeous peekaboo effect. REMOVE. Tape-ins should be moved every six to eight weeks, keeping the pace of the customer's natural growth. Gently comb out hair and follow with clarifying shampoo. "When replacing a full head of extensions, opt for an oil-based remover that keeps the integrity of the attachment intact," recommends Peter DeRosa, master educator for Platinum Seamless (@platinumseamless). Alcohol removers best fi x the occasional slip, as scalps won't require subsequent washing to remove greasy debris. BONDED BONUS. Like tape-ins, extensions attached via keratin bonds call for a fresh canvas, so wash and condition strands, then let them cool. "Set hot tool applicators to the correct temperature, above 248 degrees Fahrenheit," instructs Ron Cardillo, president of SO.CAP. USA (@socapusa). Select the same amount of natural hair as each extension piece, leaving one half- inch space from the scalp. When removing, let solvent penetrate for several minutes to crack keratin bonds. Extensions should slide off easily, sans residue or damage. For those plagued by early thinning, Micro Point Solutions by Cyberhair (@inthair) offers a non-surgical alternative. The revolutionary fi bers are three times lighter than human strands, perfect for tops of heads and front hairlines. It takes one hour to add the fi rst 600 follicles, with additional applications occurring every four weeks for undetectable, color-blended results.
