APRIL 2017 | beautylaunchpad.com | 77 AFFIRMATIVE ACTION Brands set grand examples of how to take proactive steps in caring for our third rock from the sun. HEAT WAVE Call it "The Terminator" of dryers: designed so every part can be independently replaced. Ergo 's (@ergostylingtools) tt2000 dryer saves metal and plastic from ending up in landfi lls, and pros rave about its negative ion technology that guarantees speedy dry times with impeccable results. 1 2 4 1 The Zotos (@zotosprofessional) manufacturing plant in Geneva, New York, is home to twin 1.65MW wind turbines that solely supply electricity on blustery days. Furthermore, the brand creates a majority of product containers and labels on site, thus cutting back on transportation-related fuel emissions. "Right the fi rst time" quality initiatives further reduce scrap by eliminating variation in processes and products, and packaging is reused whenever possible to reduce output of waste. 2 Aveda (@aveda) hopes to raise $6.5 million during Earth Month for its ongoing water-awareness quest. Initiatives include Catwalk for Water eco-chic fashion shows featuring visionary hair, plus inventive designs made from upcycled or repurposed materials. The company has also created a limited edition Light the Way candle, which features images drawn by kids in Madagascar who have benefi ted from previous water projects. Aveda will donate proceeds from sales to Global Greengrants Fund, a nonprofi t that strives to solve environmental problems on a world scale. 4 As the fi rst salon professional network to achieve Gold Status with Green Circle Salons, Kevin.Murphy (@love_kevin_murphy) leads efforts to make the North American salon industry sustainable by 2020. Initiatives include recycling and repurposing hair, foils, color tubes, paper and plastics, as well as diverting chemicals from drains. 3 With its Cash for Clunker program, Artizen (@artizen) strives to keep appliances out of landfi lls. Stylists can trade old or broken irons and dryers for 30 dollars off a new Artizen tool. The brand recycles used parts rather than tossing them in trash bins and gives salons loaner units so blowouts don't stop while old devices get serviced. 3 LEAVES: GETTY IMAGES; COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS
