I 'll never forget my senior prom—but not for the reasons you may think. I'm sure I had a good time. But what I remember most was what the "getting ready" portion of the evening entailed—and that meant the pivotal pre-prom pampering session at my local salon. I recall sitting in the stylist's chair, eager to see how she'd tend to my naturally curly hair, and instead of being met with openness, I was greeted with dismay. "I'm not God," she sighed. "I don't know how to work with your hair to make it look good." Needless to say, the rest of my evening was tainted by insecurity. An empathetic stylist who overheard the conversation took pity on me and agreed to work with my tresses, and she did a wonderful job, but it didn't matter: My perception of myself had, for the time being, been altered in a negative way. I believed that "textured" hair, whether worn curly or smooth, translated to "bad" hair. Thankfully, I know now this isn't true. Today more than ever, curls are celebrated rather than met with chagrin. And I am so happy that's the case. Models are rocking the catwalk on the regular, sporting the strands that Mother Nature gave them. Powerful entertainment icons (hello Beyoncé!) are often seen rocking their natural tresses. Hence, why I'm thrilled about this month's "Natural Issue." Within these pages, you'll fi nd the best products for working with curly hair (page 60), so that your spiraled client can leave your chair feeling confi dent sporting her gorgeous coif. Another "natural" note for this issue? Since April is Earth Month, we've rounded up pro-beauty companies who are doing good unto the environment, whether in the form of the products they create or the environmental initiatives they've instigated (page 74). Finally, we're presenting wefts that may be integrated into clients' own hair that, interestingly enough, serve to enhance their natural beauty (page 48). Do you cater to curly girls in your clientele? We want to see your pics! Be sure to post photos on Instagram with #BeautyLaunchpad.
