PORTFOLIO 80 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MARCH 2017 HAIR: V76 EDUCATION TEAM: VAUGHN ACORD, MILCIADES MANUEL ROLON, JESSE TAYLOR; PHOTOGRAPHER: PHOEBE CHEONG PHOTOGRAPHY; ASSISTANT: IVAN ROMERO; MODELS: HARDY HILL, IMANI MCEWAN, RANDALL PERERA Vaughn Acord, men's grooming expert and creator of V76 by Vaughn, hears rhythms in everyday salon sounds, like dryers or chitchat—a typical side effect for a lifelong musician. It makes sense, then, that Acord would take the concept of a jam session—a group of musicians coming together to try out new sounds and arrangements—and apply it to hair. "There's a clear parallel for me when it comes to creativity in those two worlds," explains Acord. "You get together with like-minded people, you bring in these ideas and you start to work with your team on what you're thinking. Then someone on the team says, 'Oh, oh, I like that! Let me have a go.' And from there you create a song, or a look, and what it ends up becoming is the sound of the band or, in this case, the look of V76." These V76 sessions happen three to four times a year, when the team gets together to try out new product combos, cut ideas and the like. For the shots seen here, Acord and V76 educators Manny Rolon and Jesse Taylor jammed following a class in Miami to create three distinct looks that show off the versatility and range of the V76 aesthetic—Acord cites V-Rated Wax, Tonic Hair and Scalp and Grooming Cream as some of the key styling players. But did the artists involved actually "jam" while they jammed? Laughs Acord, "There was music playing, and that was also inspiring us while we were working, for sure." Hair Apparent The goal here was texture, defi nition and movement, which the team achieved with Tonic Hair and Scalp and cream-based stylers. Basically, says Vaughn Acord, "nothing oil-based." Silver Fox For this look, a properly prepped canvas was essential. "We washed his hair with Energizing Shampoo, so we got a really nice vibrancy to start with," notes Acord.
