54 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MARCH 2017 Live & Learn/ Quick Tips As it applies to men's hair, Spring 2017 Fashion Week didn't just bend rules—it eliminated them. "Noticeably absent were classic, barbered looks and beards," notes Paul Wilson, American Crew global artistic director. If the shape was tapered, interiors boasted fullness. When groomed, perimeters kept length. Here, fi ve tips on how to turn these catwalk trends into daily-wear salon hair. —FRANCESCA MOISIN Mod Men CURLS "To transform runway curls to everyday spirals, cut hair in an organic manner without blunt lines, and be sure to de-bulk if needed," advises Oribe educator Dan Nguyen. Detangling primer and curl-control cream or mousse are ideal items to have on hand. "Today's coils are fl oppy, with a throwback '80s vibe," says Gary Baker, UNITE creative director. "Think shorter snips to full outgrown mops on top." COLLARBONE-LENGTH Mid-length locks were likewise hot. "Think grunge plus style—like if Kurt Cobain got all dressed up," quips Baker. For this look to work, hair must boast natural texture with minimal layers and tons of movement. Runways raged with lived-in strands, so skip the daily shampoo. "Uberclean hair often brings out the worst qualities," laughs Paul Wilson, American Crew global artistic director. "Instead, incorporate co-wash into shower regimens using a conditioner with scalp-care benefi ts." HIGH-SHINE Glossed like high-sheen glass— at some shows, such sleek locks were de rigueur. "For straight to wavy hair, fi rst de-bulk internally with a razor," explains Nguyen. "Next, generously apply gel from roots to ends on scalps that are 80 percent dry." Comb and mold in place, or focus solely on top horseshoe sections and leave remaining strands untouched to achieve contrast in texture. NATURALLY GROOMED Whether tying it high—all hail the enduring man bun!—or letting it hang, natural lengths got cleaned up on the catwalk. Start by snipping strands into an effortless, loose, round shape. "Out of the shower, have him opt for a quick spritz of texturizing spray," suggests Danny Amorim, Gib's Grooming educator and master barber at Klippers Barber Shop in Linden, New Jersey. Then he can use a large-tooth comb to smooth unruly tresses, or tousle with fi ngers for an effortless man-on-the-go fi nish. CLOSE-CROPPED This season, short cuts were treated to fresh upgrades. "When choosing a fade or taper length, leave room for error or additional tress removal by starting the fade point low," recommends Mike "Sharrpp" Walker, Gib's Grooming educator and manager at Philadelphia's Main Attraction Unisex Salon. To style looks buzzed at the hairline, encourage movement through the top with a spray or fi nishing cream that boosts shine while controlling puffi ness. 1 & 4: ALESSANDRO LUCIONI/IMAXTREE.COM; 2: MATTEOSCARPELLINI/IMAXTREE.COM; 3: IMAXTREE.COM; 5: DANIELE OBERRAUCH/IMAXTREE.COM
