Nick Irwin, global ambassador, UNITE What are you most excited about in your new role? To be with a brand that I feel has family values, and where the UNITE products are the best I've ever used. I'm excited to help grow the brand globally through my creativity and expertise. How has your experience up to this point helped prepare you for your new position? I feel throughout my career I've ticked every box, from working in a salon as artistic director to becoming global creative director leading an international creative team. This experience has given me all the tools to help take my new role to the next level. What inspires you? There are lots of elements that inspire me, from working with iconic photographer Rankin to working with the youth culture of our industry. My 7-year-old daughter Rubee has become my muse. What trends do you predict will stand out in 2017? Everything is on a '70s tip, where hair is very experimental. The whole vibe is very eclectic. What do you do when you're not working? I'm obsessed with music and I am a DJ. My time out of work can be spent making a new mix or editing tracks. I upload everything onto my SoundCloud page under "DJNickIrwin." 106 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MARCH 2017 News GETTING TO KNOW YOU Meet the industry's movers and shakers. Megan Moskowitz, regional education programs coordinator, Eufora What are you most excited about in your new role? I am most excited to support our Eufora educators on their career paths. Eufora has done so much over the years to support my journey; being able to be of service to others is truly a gift. How has your experience up to this point helped prepare you for your new position? I have worked just about every job possible in a salon, from the front desk to stylist and salon manager. Working as a distributor salon consultant I was able to work closely with salon owners and manufacturers. I was also a Eufora educator for many years. I am so grateful for all of my opportunities, as they have given me a unique perspective on the salon industry. The people I've met along the way have taught me so much. I am forever grateful. What advice do you have for stylists seeking to further their careers? As Don Bewley always said, "Always the student, never the master." Continue your education and never stop. You will not only have a fantastic skill set, but continuing education will keep you motivated and inspired. Name one continuing education course you would recommend. I would recommend Creative Expressions at the Eufora Advanced Training Academy. This course was developed to inspire extreme creativity; stylists learn to become inspired by nature and architecture and become profi cient in designing the right hairstyle for each guest, whether it's an avant-garde or commercial look. Where is your favorite place in the world? Asheville, North Carolina. The mountains are beautiful and the city has so many amazing restaurants and shops. Michelle Ryan, senior vice president of marketing, L'Oréal Professionnel What are you most excited about in your new role? I'm thrilled to lead marketing for L'Oréal's most premium salon brand in the US! L'Oréal Professionnel is a beautiful high-end Parisian brand, with a rich heritage rooted in research and innovation, and respected in the industry for inspiring education and on-trend collections. I'm looking forward to driving our digital and social footprint in the US and bringing this beautiful brand story to many more luxury salon partners. And best of all, I have an amazing team of talented marketers to help me. How has your experience up to this point helped prepare you for your new position? With L'Oréal, I've been fortunate to work on various beauty categories and across all types of distribution channels from salon to retail to luxury. I actually started my L'Oréal career with Matrix 16 years ago and fell in love with the hairdressing industry during that time. At Matrix, I learned that education is at the heart of all marketing activities. By understanding the needs of the hairdresser fi rst, I was able to bring to market several haircolor innovations that are mainstay products in the salon industry to this day! From there, working on a large retail brand in both the skincare and haircolor categories was a fascinating experience because it gave me a direct connection to the consumer. In these two categories, it is essential to gain the trust of the consumer fi rst, so having a clear insight and offering credible support is essential, and, of course, you have to communicate all of that in just 15 to 30 seconds! And fi nally, my experience in multicultural beauty helped me understand the impact of a digital business model on driving engagement for your brand in an extremely competitive marketplace. Now with L'Oréal Professionnel, I can leverage all of my marketing experiences and skills to help our salons grow their business and capture the hearts of their consumers with our fabulous products and services. What advice would you give to stylists looking to market themselves? In the same way you connect with personal friends on social media, you need to connect with existing and future clients. Become completely engaged in social media to create your brand story. Before-and-after pictures are a great way to demonstrate the beautiful results you can achieve for a client. Absorb as much as you can on Instagram and Facebook and look at how other brands and stylists you admire display their work on social channels. I learn so much by listening to Johnny Ramirez and Anh Co Tran tell stories of how they fi rst began to use social media and blogs to create their clientele and showcase their work. How do you decompress? I had a milestone birthday this year so I bought myself a baby grand piano as a present. I try to play a few songs each evening to unwind after a hectic day—I'm trying to master a new song each month. If you could go anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would it be? I'd love to take my family to Italy. My husband and I were there many years ago and absolutely loved it. I'd love to return and show my girls Rome, Tuscany and Positano. COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS
