S panish label Desigual never shorts its fans on loud color and lively prints; it's a clothing brand that doesn't take itself seriously and wouldn't want its wearers to, either. Not surprisingly, the wares warrant lively hair: two braided styles that push the envelope. "We're inspired by Japanese street-culture kids," Amika Hair Lead Edward Lampley says backstage. "Their love of pastel hair, how they bleach it—it's very raver-esque." For the fi rst style, Lampley creates a deep center part and weaves tight cornrows that sprout from it. On any given head, a mélange of brightly hued rubber bands secures the braids. The second style employs fatter plaits that zigzag in all different directions; for this look, Lampley nixes a part and lets the hair dictate the "zigs" and "zags." No matter the style, Lampley indicates the key is gritty texture: "Without the grit you can't braid; the braids will slip out." He avers that this is particularly true for women with over-processed blonde hair, which Lampley liberally "dirties" up with Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo (loveamika.com). To conjure the correct amount of grit for every girl, Lampley adds into his cocktail a mixture of Bombshell Blowout Spray and Un.Done Texture Spray. As he's fi nishing the zigzag braids by gently tugging on them to loosen up the style, he notes, "The designers like to make a statement. They like a good, strong look." With this grit, they got exactly that.
