T he beauty buzzword of the season is one that typically doesn't get much play during Fashion Week: individuality. In New York, runway after runway played host to looks that threw out uniformity and instead embraced a woman's own unique features—right down to the texture of her hair. At Tibi, this spotlight on the self is paramount for the hair direction, which Aveda Lead Frank Rizzieri sums up as "cool girls doing their own thing." Though the technique for this loosey-goosey downstyle is the same from girl to girl, Rizzieri notes that he's tweaking it ever so slightly for each model according to her hair's singular quirks and bends. First, Rizzieri spritzes Aveda Thickening Tonic throughout the lengths to boost body and lift (aveda.com). Then he blow-dries the lengths using his hands to rake the whirl of tresses, noting, "Your hands are the best brush you own!" Why forego a brush? "If you dry hair with a brush, you get a really 'done' look, but when you use your hands, your blowout doesn't get too prissy. You get a bit of movement at the root, so it's just that slightly undone, loose fi nish," he explains. As the styling process continues, Rizzieri upholds his ban on brushes and combs, twisting sections while spraying the hair and roots with Pure Abundance Style-Prep and then setting each twist with a hot blast from the blowdryer. After he unravels each spiral, Rizzieri pumps Shampure Dry Shampoo under the crown to disrupt the hair's natural wont to defl ate. He tousles the hair and dry shampoo together with—what else?—his fi ngers, and says, "We're creating that second-day look on the fi rst day." The effect changes ever so slightly from head to head—some girls sport straighter strands, others have a bit more separation. It's all completely individual—and what is cooler than standing apart from the crowd?
