62 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JULY 2016 Come one, come all: At Square Colour Salon + Spa, a three-pronged approach to top-tier education elevates artistry for stylists and clients alike. —TRACY MORIN Live & Learn/ Learning Curve Hip to Be Square L as Vegas' Square Colour Salon + Spa rightly receives hordes of accolades—from winning NAHA's Salon Design of the Year in 2012 to scoring shout-outs in Elle and InStyle—but perhaps its crowning achievement remains an intense education focus. The 5,600-square-foot space, helmed by owner and stylist Barbara Garcia-Grove for nearly a decade, promises "the best in beauty," fueled by a pervasive quest to spread the wealth (of knowledge, that is). "Her mission is to make every client happy, but she also makes it a priority to give her team of stylists all the support and education they need to succeed," explains Education Director Jenny Savage. "For her, knowledge is power—because word of mouth is key." Square's triple-threat regimen includes twice- monthly in-salon training for its stylists, with outside pros welcomed with the new program Drop-In Ticket. Staff offer style coaching to clients, such as classes on braiding, blow-drying or how to fi nesse a curling or fl at iron. Finally, academy classes host lead stylists and accomplished educators from around the country. "Our goal is to elevate the level of education in the Southwest by hosting top-tier workshops and presentations by the world's greatest educators," Savage details. "We've created a program that's diverse in subject matter and price point in order to inspire stylists—no matter what part of their career they're in." Curriculum is based not only on the latest trends, but a concentration on teaching the "why" behind techniques—Savage calls it an "open-door approach" for both stylists and clients. And the pedagogical pursuits are paying off: Garcia-Grove and Savage launched Square's new hair academy in January to focus on trends and the latest styling/color techniques, while last April the Atelier at Square (adjacent to the salon) opened its doors to offer speedy services. "Education allows our stylists the confi dence to deliver the results clients ask for," Savage concludes. "Our focus on learning has defi nitely raised the bar at our salon, keeping our stylists motivated and passionate about developing their craft." CLASS ACT Square Salon's inaugural class, "The Undone Color," kicked off subsequent education featuring styling superstars like Stephanie Brinkerhoff , DJ Muldoon, Heather Chapman and Rebecca Taylor. Want to join the movement? Upcoming academies include "Pastel Braids and Business" with Chita Besseau and Shelley Gregory (July 31) as well as "Style Boot Camp" with Sharon Blain (September 11 to 14). 1225 S. Fort Apache Road #160 Las Vegas, NV 89117 squaresalon.com Education is de rigueur at the salon, with staff constantly learning a wealth of fresh techniques. At Square Colour Salon + Spa, a sweeping front waiting area makes for a grand guest reception.
