50 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JULY 2016 T his is a story of parallel paths. Industry icons Louis Licari and Rodney Cutler met nearly two decades ago while swimming in side-by-side lanes at New York's Reebok Sports Club in Manhattan. "We're both triathletes, so eventually we began chatting in the locker room," Licari recalls. "Though over the years we've competed fi ercely, that was also the start of a true friendship." The name Licari is synonymous with stunning highlighting and dye techniques. "I'd say Louis is one of the most infl uential colorists in American history," notes Cutler. His luxe salon has long occupied the 15th fl oor of Fifth Avenue's historic Valentino building. "Classic" is the term most often used to describe both ambiance and clientele—but the same can't be said for Cutler. Where the former is established uptown posh, the latter is downtown rock-and-roll specializing in rule-breaking razor cuts. No one thought these opposing forces might someday meet, but this is also a story of parallel paths that converged when Cutler called his pal to discuss the possibility of an unprecedented merger. Neither man needed the alliance. Both brands and business owners were enjoying popularity and fi nancial success. "I wouldn't have even considered the proposition, had it been with anyone but Rodney," reveals Licari. Yet the prospect had an irresistibly strong selling point: It was just wacky enough to work. Doors opened on Leap Day, February 29, in the former Licari space, which had serendipitously just been renovated. Neutral cream, taupe and beige shades dominate, to help lend Zen when the vibe gets raucous. Specially installed ceiling acoustics muffl e loud sounds so as to promote ease of conversation. And all furniture, from the angular front desk to color and cutting stations, were custom-built by designer Pryor Callaway. The result is an unprecedented hybrid of chic and funk, where a Park Avenue doyenne might be found sitting beside a tattoo-covered artist sporting lavender tresses. Thus far the most challenging aspect of the union has been merging the Licari and Cutler educational offerings, and for a time colorists and stylists were still attending courses at their respective schools. But that's also changing. "Our joint training program will soon layer the best of our practices, from hair painting to razor-shaping," discloses Cutler. "It will be a true blending of philosophies." Louis Licari's superior color services meet Rodney Cutler's cutting-edge clipping techniques at New York's Licari Cutler Salon. —FRANCESCA MOISIN Conversations/ Salon of the Month Details, Details Square feet: 4,000 Chairs: 36 Haircare and color lines: Redken Special perks: Dedicated keratin treatment room; coffee bar and complimentary Saturday mimosas LICARI CUTLER SALON 693 Fifth Avenue, 15th Floor New York, NY 10022 212.758.2090 Double Trouble Though over the years we've competed fi ercely, that was also the start of a true friendship." —LOUIS LICARI Licari Cutler Salon refl ects both owners' personalities—a blend of elegance and edginess.
