W hile other girls her age are busy hanging out with friends, 15-year-old Polished Girlz Founder Alanna Wall spends her time at local hospitals, where she brings a touch of sparkle to those with special needs or those who face frequent hospitalization due to recurring illnesses. And how exactly does she bring the pretty to these deserving young women? With a bottle of nail polish and an innate talent for painting digits. "My mom is a nurse, and she would tell me about the kids she would meet in the hospital," Wall recalls. "I love helping people. I also love polishing my nails, and I thought that polishing the nails of others whose spirits could use a lift would be a great way to help." Yet because of her tender age (Wall was only 10 years old at the time!) she wasn't allowed to polish nails at the hospital, so she and her mom contacted a local association for children with Down syndrome and began providing manis at their monthly meetings. "We put up a website, went on Facebook and Instagram and told co-workers, family members and friends about what we were doing, and we got a lot of support," says Wall. As word of Polished Girlz outreach spread, more and more people volunteered to help, including an entire high school girls' volleyball team. "We reach out on social media and the response has been sponsorships, donations from nail polish companies, and even celebrity nail techs volunteering their money and time," enthuses Wall. After a guest appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Polished Girlz volunteers jumped from 50 to close to 800. Currently, the organization has approximately 850 volunteers in 32 states in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. "We're hoping to polish 25,000 patients this year," Wall relates. From a 10-year-old's dream to international outreach, Polished Girlz is proof that age has nothing to do with the ability to affect change. "Our motto is, 'You're never too young to make a difference,'" shares Wall. Too true. 46 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JULY 2016 Polished Girlz Founder Alanna Wall shows that you're never too young to make a difference. —BARBARA BAZALDUA Conversations/ Giving Back Of a Certain Age BECOMING A POLISHED GIRL If you or someone you know would like to learn more about Polished Girlz, visit its website, polishedgirlz.org. "We stay in constant contact with our volunteers," Wall says. "They can always let us know if they need any more supplies or have questions. A lot of our volunteers are kids, and they're just as excited about Polished Girlz as I am!" Wall tends to the nails of patients whose spirits could use a lift. Polished Girlz Founder Alanna Wall
