80 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2016 ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS My seven years of sobriety is my greatest achievement— everything else comes after that and I have nothing without it. Work-wise, my greatest achievement was getting in to the union. It's a very diffi cult process: You need to work 60 days on set in three consecutive years. Yes, I know it took me 25 years! I cried the day they accepted me. Taking a break from working on the set with Talking Dead's Chris Hardwick, celebri ty stylist Sean James chats with Executive Editor Amy Dodds about sobriety, creativity and what makes him cry. Open your mind to the world and to acceptance of other cultures—your world will only get bigger!" A Sean James poses on the red carpet at the 2015 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, where he was nominated for his work. HAPPY ACCIDENT I moved to Los Angeles with the dream of doing magazine covers— little did I know then that I should have moved to NYC! Most recently I styled Jamie Lee Curtis for her Variety cover with Lady Gaga. HE COMES FROM THE LAND DOWN UNDER Just thinking about it brings a tear to my eye: Australia is the most wonderful country, with beautiful, loving, adventurous people who have a great love for the planet. I'm from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, but I recently went for a trip to Coolangatta, and I loved its simplicity. I will return. James and a new pal hang out. HELPING HANDS I am empty inside if I'm not doing hair. I was born to be of service. I get the most satisfaction when I'm helping another human being—especially helping them to look and feel good about themselves. The Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles James hangs with pal Weird Al on the Comedy Cetral set. STRUCTURE First and foremost, art and architecture are my greatest infl uences. Frank Gehry always blows me away and I admire the Bauhaus movement with its sleek, angular looks and sharp design. James with client Jamie Lee Curtis
