T hese days, it's not enough to be a simple ring of fabric or a thin arc of metal. To truly command attention, a headband needs something more—typically a fl ower, a bauble or a stud. But this season, the band's width seemed a force to be reckoned with, as many designers asked hairstylists to double up the density. At Dolce & Gabbana, Redken Global Creative Director Guido decked a 'do with an orchard of oranges piled high and wide; surprisingly, its girth doesn't detract or overpower. Width and length came into play at Cushnie et Ochs; Moroccanoil Creative Director Antonio Corral Calero tied up his design with thick bandannas brandishing erect bows that splayed for inches in each direction. For Givenchy, Chanel and 3.1 Phillip Lim, doubling up headbands lent derring-do to manes. Lead Hairstylist Sam McKnight practiced "more is more" at Chanel by placing multiple silver metal headbands of varying textures atop heads. At Givenchy, hair legend Luigi Murenu for Kérastase raked strands back with a double-wide, toothed band brandishing two rows of large gold pyramids and gigantic clear rhinestones. And Wella Professionals Lead Hairstylist Paul Hanlon took a less glam approach at 3.1 Phillip Lim by layering burlap bandannas over netting for a rough-and-tumble, "tough" feel. Certainly, if headbands continue their expansion, they'll become hats. But until then, we're betting their growth will spread to your clients—and that's not too big a stretch.
