T rue friends, successful careers and the ability to live independently are things most of us take for granted. But what if they were out of reach for you or someone you love due to intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD)? When Kenny Kahn, CEO of luxe haircare line Beauty & Pin-Ups (, fi rst began building the new brand, he and his team knew it was important to be meaningfully involved in a cause that would run deeply throughout the company culture. "We realized that the women who were the original pinups in the '30s and '40s must have had a tremendous sense of confi dence and empowerment," Kahn explains. "We decided that Beauty & Pin-Ups should refl ect that spirit." A business partner put Kahn in touch with Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Founder of Best Buddies International (, the world's largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of people with IDD. Kahn met with Shriver and felt an immediate connection. Beauty & Pin-Ups had found its soul mate. Today, Beauty & Pin-Ups gives a portion of all product sales to Best Buddies. "But we wanted to do more than simply put a logo on a bottle," says Kahn. Not only does the company employ Buddies to work at all their events and shows—one personable young woman named Katie Meade, who has Down syndrome, is the model on the packaging for Fearless hair rescue mask treatment, and has become the brand's Global Ambassador. "Katie is involved in everything we do," notes Kahn. "She works all the shows, including presenting onstage. She has a huge impact on everyone she meets. Katie helps us communicate the message that beauty belongs to everyone." We couldn't agree more: When we had the opportunity to meet Meade ourselves recently, we asked her what beauty meant to her. She enthusiastically replied, "Beauty is being fearless. Beauty is me!" 42 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | JUNE 2016 When haircare company Beauty & Pin-Ups partnered with Best Buddies International, a beautiful friendship bloomed. —BARBARA BAZALDUA Conversations/ Giving Back Katie Meade, Global Ambassador for Beauty & Pin-Ups, is a Best Buddies International Spokesperson and model for the Fearless hair mask.
