H ow important is placement? If you slide a barrette two inches to the left or weave a braid below or above the ear, does it make that much of a difference? The answer: a resounding yes. For runway artists, playing with placement morphs hair designs from everyday to extraordinary, adding a touch of whimsy. At Ashish, a rainbow of sequins fl utters down strands in a haphazard fashion, their direction random—yet the way in which they're placed is as complex and commanding as can be. Backstage at Rodarte, Lead Hairstylist Odile Gilbert fi ddles with the arrangement of gilded hair clips, adjusting the composition from girl to girl. For one model, a barrette drops dangerously low on her forehead—enough so that the result jars onlookers who know a peculiar placement when they see it. Such a calculated maneuver makes all the difference, just as it does at PPQ, where strategic crimps concentrated right behind the ear frame the face in such a way that a whole head of kinks certainly would not. In every case, such intention and attention to detail changes the hair story, elevating it to a level that may seem disorienting at fi rst, but has the intended effect: It makes people look and gets them talking—for the better.
