42 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2016 Master's Degrees Designed to seamlessly integrate cut, color and style, the new Goldwell Master Stylist Program promises an educational journey toward heightened stylist success. —TRACY MORIN W hen education-hungry stylists clamored for additional inspiration from the color authorities at Goldwell, they listened—and swiftly took action. Enter the Goldwell Master Stylist Program (goldwell.us), spearheaded by another industry guru: London-based educator Jay Mahmood, now Global Creative Ambassador of Cutting, designed a curriculum for pros at all levels, igniting this year at Goldwell academies in New York City and Santa Monica, California. "Stylists love the look of our visuals, and they wanted to know more than just color formula," explains John Moroney, VP and Creative Director of Kao Salon Division-Global. "The new program focuses on the art and craft of cutting and styling, designed by experts in those disciplines." Mahmood calls the fresh curriculum "a whole new language" for the brand, designed to run parallel to the company's already-successful Master Colorist Program and arranged as a journey, from foundations to advanced techniques. Start with three-day Essential Shapes (fundamentals of cutting); strengthen your foundations with Master Stylist Trend and Calling All Lefties!; and move to advanced courses in Razor Artistry, The Modern Barber and Celebrity Trends. "A lot of stylists go through the motions when cutting; they might do the same one or two cuts on everyone throughout their careers," Mahmood muses. "I've tried to create something that gets people to understand the reasons behind what they do." Meanwhile, Moroney looks forward to further expanding the Master Colorist Program (already operating in 30-plus countries) to create parallel programs, culminating in the Master Design Curriculum (Master Colorist, Master Stylist and a Master Texture Program launching in 2017), allowing stylists to conquer all elements of design. "The biggest problem—and solution—in our industry is education," Mahmood concludes. "But once you start to arm yourself with knowledge and things start to make sense, it's truly liberating." John Moroney dishes on why he chose Jay Mahmood to lead Goldwell's new venture: "Jay has a strong background in cutting, having been a salon leader, an artistic director and an academy leader with Vidal Sassoon in London. He went on to lead another top academy in London while teaching seminars globally. With his unique blend of a strong, disciplined cutting background, plus the intuition of a working stylist, he's designed a program that's technical, yet not complicated—and, most importantly, intuitive and relevant. He also has an incredible passion for teaching stylists; it shows in every one of his seminars!" Mahmood's Mastery THE WHOLE SHEBANG Goldwell's new Master Stylist Program focuses on cutting and styling techniques. LIVE & LE A R N Head of the Class
