120 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2016 News It's hard to believe that the opulent Goldwell Academy building in New York used to be a parking garage! The ornate salon was built entirely from scratch, in one of the most inspirational cities in the world. Indeed, the Master Stylist Essentials Prelaunch event, held at the famed Academy, inspired guests to the umpteenth degree. Stylists enrolled in the Master Stylist Program gathered as Jay Mahmood, Goldwell Global Creative Ambassador of Cutting, effervescently exercised his scissors. Mark Holloway and Joshua Calderon joined Mahmood, taking guests through a journey of color and styling. While on stage, Mahmood stressed the importance of understanding the reasons behind how to cut. This attention to detail is the backbone of the Master Stylist Essentials Shapes class, which employs a standardized language for hair professionals. Guests were treated to a preview of techniques that can be expected from the longer course, including a focus on fundamentals, layering from the front, gradation from the back and wrap and tension drying techniques. "The main thing is for people to fall in love with cutting hair again," Mahmood confi dently explained. "I'm sure you can take a version of what you've seen tonight and do it in the salon." It wasn't hard to spot the excitement of attendees as the night continued. The inspiration was contagious, with Mahmood leading the way. "If you want to be amongst the best in the world, nobody can stop you," he shared. Some Enchanted Evening Goldwell models show all that the brand has to offer. Jay Mahmood shares his cutting skills with attendees. TOP: EMILIE BRANCH (2) CUTTING A RUG A cut-a-thon is a perfect way to show off styling skills, beautify clients and raise money for a good cause. Earthly Body teamed up with the Get Together Foundation for its third-annual Holiday Cut-a-thon, which raises money for underserved teens and children in the community. The event took place at Earthly Body's new Los Angeles-area salon and raised almost $1,500—plus three large bags of toys. And the event didn't stop at $20 haircuts: Products were sold to passersby, Paw Parent Animal Sanctuary had dogs and cats available for adoption and there was even a barbeque. Good food and a good cause? What a wonderful world, indeed. Read more about the Master Stylist Program on page 42!
