112 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | MAY 2016 News GETTING TO KNOW YOU Meet the industry's movers and shakers. Biana Lerman, Marketing Coordinator, Earthly Body What are you most excited about in your new role? I am most excited to be part of such a great team that is passionate about making products with natural ingredients, who care about the environment and who give back to the community in many ways. Overall, it's a combination of feeling like I am part of a family and excited about the products that I am sharing with the professional stylists, consumers and media. I'm also excited to be representing what I consider the best hair-strengthening product in the market. Being part of this new category that is changing the beauty industry—and knowing the incredible response we are getting from the stylists using our product—makes me happy. What do you love most about the beauty industry? What I love most is that I get to work with products that I love, be a part of making women feel beautiful and meet amazingly creative new people from all over the world. Can you tell us about a challenge you've had to overcome in your professional career? I think the hardest challenge I faced in my beauty career was when the controversy with smoothing treatments happened a few years ago. I was working with a large brand at the time, and the category was new to the industry. This brand was hit hard by the negativity surrounding the use of formaldehyde in its products, and it was a great challenge to come back from the bad press and re-educate the world on the truth behind the treatment. It was like I got a crash course in media management, product education and crisis management all at the same time. The main lesson I learned was that no matter what challenge you face, if you are part of a company that joins together instead of falls apart in the face of adversity, you can and will overcome anything— and it will make you much more knowledgeable and business-savvy in the long run. What do you do when you're not working? I'm a mom, so when I'm not working I spend as much time as possible with my husband and my 17-month-old son. That mainly consists of going to kids' play gyms, crawling around on the fl oor and reading lots of children's books—these are the best moments of my day. Kevin Lewis, Sam Villa ArTeam, Sam Villa What are you most excited about in your new role? What's exciting about this new role is my love for education. As a salon owner, a stylist on the fl oor and a new ArTeam member, my focus has always been on education. The heart of Sam Villa is about sharing our discoveries with the industry, so for me, it's not just an opportunity to grow personally, it's an opportunity to elevate the industry in Canada. How do you keep your clients' color fresh? I watch fashion very closely and I love to see how it fl ows from the runway to celebrities, and then to the guests sitting in my chair. Celebrities wear many color trends, so being familiar with who is wearing what is key. Also, for 15 years I have worked in a Redken concept salon. When new techniques and colors are launched, we are the fi rst to receive them. I make sure to offer my clients something new to keep it exciting and fresh. What inspires you? Being surrounded by artists always inspires me because we all do things differently. In my experience, when I'm surrounded by other passionate stylists I become so creative, and often can produce even more when collaborating with them. Being part of a team is inspiring for me! Where was your last vacation? I was on Salt Spring Island, which is a half-hour ferry ride from home. It's beautiful and remote so whenever I'm there it's a chance for me to stop and appreciate my life. I always return home feeling grateful. powerful pink Great job, Fromm Beauty! The brand has donated $25,000 to Bright Pink, a nonprofi t focused on decreasing cases of breast and ovarian cancer by encouraging younger women to live proactively. Fromm created the Pink Hope Brush through this powerful partnership, donating 50 percent of proceeds to the charity. It's easy to see why so many sold: The brush adds color (for a good cause!) to any salon counter. The next Bright Pink and Fromm product will be launching in J 7 imprint. We can't wait to see it! Fromm goes pink for a good cause! DJ Makes Music with Bellus Bellus Academy has added DJ Muldoon to its prestigious team as Creative Director. The theFactory Founder and 2016 Southwest Hairstyling Award recipient will develop signature cuts and styles for the academy's education tract. Muldoon is perfectly suited for this position, as he possesses an immense passion for education. "I want to be part of shaping the next generation of hairstyling talent. Education starts and stops with the teacher, and today's generation of students is fortunate to benefi t from incredible technologies unavailable to previous generations," enthuses Muldoon.
