Flying Sola When planning the fi rst-ever Sola Salon Studios' Sola Sessions—held in February in Denver—Jennie Wolff, VP of Marketing and Stylist Programs, and her team asked the business owners who make up the Sola community what they wanted to learn and who they wanted to see. The results were a bit contradictory. "What they said they needed most was business and marketing support, but what they wanted the most were the artists," laughs Wolff, "so we knew it had to be a healthy balance of both." And it was: Director of Education Kim Bennett Horvath and Cofounders Stratton Smith and Matt Briger started things off with stories of Sola's origins, and Nina Kovner, the candid Founder of Passion Squared, followed with a talk on purpose- and passion-driven branding. Wolff offered up a lesson on the marketing resources available through Sola, and Redken's Michael Cole gave a high-energy presentation on maximizing earnings. After a break for lunch, the afternoon sessions focused on artistry, with amazing demonstrations from Aquage Cofounder Luis Alvarez and educator Nicole Gary, theFactory's DJ Muldoon and Redken's Sam Villa. The sold-out, one-day event welcomed 250 attendees who paid only $99 per ticket—which, in addition to a full day of quality education, also included a swag bag, lunch and a drink ticket for a happy hour with appetizers. "We covered a huge portion of the event out of our education fund to keep that ticket price really low," reveals Wolff. "We wanted something affordable and accessible for as many Sola stylists as possible." And speaking of accessible, more regional Sola Sessions are in the works over the next two years, with Minneapolis hosting one this month (April 25), followed by Orange County, California (September 12) and Charlotte, North Carolina (November 14). CEO Ben Jones says details are still forthcoming about four more in 2017, but they will be in Florida, the Washington D.C. area, northern California and Dallas. "I think what we're starting here is just going to become more of an institution," smiles Jones. "These Sessions are going to become not just great education, but places where our Sola community can really connect with each other and feel awesome about being a part of the Sola team."
