APRIL 2016 | beautylaunchpad.com | 75 Mistake #1 Cutting curly hair the same way you would straight hair. There are many differences that have to be taken into account in order to properly cut curly hair, like porosity, texture and spring factor, to name a few. If you use the same techniques to cut curls as you would straight strands, your curly haired client will leave the salon with mushroom head, tons of frizz and typically too-short locks (which is always a fear of curlies). One technique for cutting coils is dry-cutting curl by curl according to where the ringlet naturally falls. You also need to be aware of the angles the hair is being cut in order to get the proper shape and avoid the forbidden "triangle." It's important to use the proper tools so that you don't fray strands and cause more frizz. There is also a time and a place to use wet- cutting techniques; you just need to adjust your application on a case-by-case curl basis. Mistake #2 Assuming the client wants her hair blown straight. I hear this complaint all the time. People who prefer to wear their hair curly don't necessarily want to leave the salon with straight hair! Mistake #3 Coloring curly hair the same way you would straight hair. Once again, curly hair is often very dry, coarse and porous. It also refl ects light differently since it does not lay fl at. It takes some thought and planning in order to achieve great, healthy color results on curly hair. For instance, you may need to adjust the product you'd normally use for highlights in a less aggressive manner, like using 5- or 10-volume developers with a lightener instead of 20, 30 or 40.
