APRIL 2016 | beautylaunchpad.com | 73 On the perception of curls through the years… [Natural hair has] moved in a positive direction, but there's still resistance. Even now, in certain markets women are considered more professional or more desirable if they have straight hair. The change is happening, but there's still a long way to go. Stylists can have a big impact on their clients' hair decisions. Schools don't always teach students how to work on curly hair, but a class on blowouts is de rigueur. A shift in cosmetology school curricula would be a step forward. On the defi nition of "natural hair"… It's hard, because everyone's version of what is "natural" differs. In regards to the natural hair movement, some proponents tried to defi ne it as a particular hair type, but everybody has a different opinion on what that type is. For instance, is it hair that isn't chemically relaxed? Or maybe hair that doesn't have any product at all? Natural hair is too tough to defi ne! Whereas I think there was a more vigilant, militant approach in years prior in terms of how curly haired women "should" wear their hair, I think that camp has become more open and has broadened what it deems "natural." On this season's runways… Some designers are promoting texture as a trend, but it's not a trend—it's a staple. The majority of runway models seem to have blonde straight hair that's tied in a ponytail; it's still not representative of the real women out there. More than half the population has some texture; the runways do not represent that. On this year's texture trend forecast… The voluminous look seems to be really hot right now. On these amazing heads of curly hair, it's the bigger the better, which I love. And bangs are also becoming more popular with the texture-hair set.
