APRIL 2016 | beautylaunchpad.com | 71 A few years ago as Solange Knowles was just coming onto the indie scene, she was labeled by press as "cool" and "edgy," with many observers noting her preference for embracing the natural curls she was blessed to have been born with. Then…something happened. There was a shift. The "natural hair movement" was born. And the thinking behind the movement—that one's natural texture should be a source of pride, not shame—was something to be celebrated in a society that, let's be honest, often prefers artifi ce to authenticity. Yet people had differing opinions on what being "natural" meant, and were unafraid to voice their thoughts in myriad public arenas. While many of the natural texture movement's proponents were in favor of Knowles' voluminous curls, there were also those who were markedly upset that she was the new "face" of natural- haired women. "She isn't wearing her hair right," someone would say. "She's making those with curls look bad." "Her hair is too frizzy." "She needs to show what natural texture looks like to the best of her abilities, and that's by using more product." While it is true that good product works wonders for any hair type (and you can read about top products for curls in the subsequent pages!), there's no reason women should fear rocking their ringlets as they see fi t, without judgment from others. Luckily, it seems that the time of natural hair acceptance is at an all-time high. High-fashion models Lineisy Montero and Imaan Hammam are dominating the runways with their natural locks; celebs like Zendaya are showing everyone that rocking tresses that look different than others' is not only acceptable, but desirable; and virtually every major haircare brand has an offering specifi cally meant to serve curls. There's a revolution happening. And this time, we're really ready. That's where you come in. You are an agent of change, a rule-breaker, a trend-maker: It's up to you to arm yourself with the know-how and vision to truly cater to your curly haired clientele.
