F ew of us get to travel the world in search of inspiration, but we're thankful when those who can globetrot bring home a semblance of the beauty they encountered abroad. Such is the case of Naeem Khan's Spring collection, a mirror of the beautiful blooms he witnessed recently in Mexico and the Mediterranean realized as exquisite embroidery and beading on ball gowns and caftans alike. The accompanying hair blooms just as the clothing does, thanks to the artful hands of Davines Master Session Ambassador Joseph DiMaggio. "She's an upscale woman who lives in the Italian countryside, yet she's always super-polished and put together," he says of the inspiration for the intricate design. "She's our Mediterranean muse who travels extravagantly and lives a luxurious lifestyle— with a sleek hairstyle to match." To bring this sense of refi nement to the style, DiMaggio points to the product he's using—specifi cally, More Inside This Is A Volume Boosting Mousse (us.davines.com), which he applies from root to tip. "It has a lot of control and memory hold, so it's able to keep the style in place," he explains, quickly adding, "but the hair is sleek and soft. This is not about fi xation; a helmet is not what we want." From here, he gathers the lengths into a low ponytail, keeping the silhouette streamlined, and reapplies more mousse to the tail for added control. He then begins constructing what he's calling "an open chignon" that blossoms like a fl ower: Using an elastic string, DiMaggio rolls the top section of the tail into a loop, secures it by wrapping the cord around the center of the loop, and then does the same to the bottom section of the tail. No pins are involved; DiMaggio says Khan "wanted a piece of artwork in the back" and the absence of pins makes it even more clean and graphic. Instead, he lacquers the look into place with More Inside This Is A Medium Hair Spray and More Inside This Is A Shimmering Mist. Because the beauty muse harkens from the Mediterranean, the fi nal addition of headscarves— some hand-embroidered, some not—gives the hairstyle that worldly touch. DiMaggio feels right at home introducing this last detail into the look. "I'm Italian, so I've seen these head wraps from my grandmother," DiMaggio laughs. "I'm well- acquainted." A timeless dash of glamour that never goes out of style—it's worth acquainting your clients with, as well.
