Farouk Shami, Founder of Farouk Systems, and more than 5,000 of his closest friends from 142 countries celebrated his 50 years in the industry while reveling in the future direction of the company during its Global Conference in Cancun, Mexico. In one of the boldest announcements, CEO Basim Shami shared that actress/ singer Zendaya is the new CHI Brand Ambassador—especially refreshing given her body-positive stance in the media. Additionally, Basim related the new launches as well as an exciting partnership with Esquire magazine. The opening show featured trends in hair and color, underscored by beautiful fashions from Project Runway All-Star Winner Dmitry Sholokhov. The Interactive Learning Center allowed everyone to see, touch and feel the latest product launches by CHI and BioSilk, and educators were on hand to answer any questions. Vice President of Shows and Education, Lisa Marie Garcia, created an array of educational classes such as Trend Cutting and Styling, The Art of Color and Men's Grooming, among others, plus a special Q&A; session with top celebrity hairstylists and designers. To close the conference, Farouk Systems hosted an elaborate gala that included a spectacular Global Runway Show with looks from 14 countries. Performances by Flo Rida and musical artist Massari entertained the crowd. "Farouk Systems once again leads our industry into the future," says Basim. "We are giving our customers the education, innovative tools and products they need to grow their businesses. Our goal remains to be a company that is privately owned and dedicated to putting the hairdresser fi rst." —Amy Dodds HISTORY IN THE MAKING Lotus Abrams, Editor of The Colorist, left, and Amy Dodds, Editor of Launchpad, present Farouk Shami with a special plaque commemorating all the stories he's inspired over the years. The global fashion show presented hair looks from 14 countries and featured more than 60 models. Leland, the legend of haircolor, will be introducing a new product for colorists in the next few months (lelandh.com/ fi rst). "There is a new emotion for your colorbrain coming," he exclaims, "and it's going to be a game-changer!" In the meantime, we asked him to share a coloring trick to brighten your client's spirit (and hair!) during the chilly winter months. "I call the technique Facets, and it's the new highlights," Leland says. Here's his how-to: Your client's hair is your canvas. Create your own abstraction by varying how you apply lightener on each foil. To create Facets, alternate foils of lightener between zigzags, diagonals and straight brush strokes down the hair, leaving previously colored or lightened ends untouched. Use less lightener at the scalp, more at the ends, eliminating regrowth lines, and take the lightener to the scalp on every second or third foil. To keep the lightener angles intact and from bleeding, add a second foil on top and fold it over. Mix it up! The beauty is, because there's no rhyme or reason, the technique adds vibrations like the natural facets of gems. Have fun. Break the mechanics. Use your colorbrain! Mix Master
