22 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | NOVEMBER 2018 Trendsetters/Runway Report A backstage beauty bomb went off at Libertine when designer Johnson Hartig forewent his beloved punk roots this season—for the hair, that is. "We're creating a nice shape," explains Elaine Mitchell, Libertine's hair lead and creative director for Sassoon Salon (@sassoonsalonoffi cial) in New York. "The hair is going to be tucked into the necklines and there will be nice brooches." She likens this shape to 1920s and 1930s bobs, gussied up with sensual fi nger waves preferred by the fl appers of yesteryear. To craft the silhouette, Mitchell fi rst adds shimmering density to the hair through a two-prong approach. "We used a golf ball-size bit of Kérastase Densifi que Densimorphose Thickening Treatment Mousse at the part, brushed it through and blow-dried it for shine," she says. Then, she forms a large lower section and bakes tiny crimped waves throughout its entirety. "We're crimping the underneath to give it some padding for the expansion," Mitchell points out. That foundational padding helps bulk up the billowing faux bob, which is made grander by way of a three-prong waving iron. "We're creating gorgeous fi nger waves with this curling iron on the top of the hair," Mitchell notes, adding that Kérastase Laque Dentelle Flexible Hold Spray solidifi es the look. "We're misting this soft hairspray all over for a fl ossy, airy feel—it's a really touchable spray," she says. Once the hair fl oats fancifully, Mitchell swoops the bang area and pins the lengths back at the ears with bobby pins. When the models step into their clothing, the frothy cloud of hair gets tucked tight to the neck, only to fi nd Mitchell tugging and pulling it into a massive bob-like form. "I wanted to fi nish with a look that was just as creative as the collection," Mitchell asserts. And this bob most defi nitely delivers. HERO PRODUCT: Kérastase Laque Dentelle Flexible Hold Spray provides touchable hold for fl ossy, fi lled-out faux bobs. KEY STEP: Adding unseen crimping to the underside of the style builds up the foundation needed for a maximalist shape.
