46 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | SEPTEMBER 2018 M att Coulter was coping with a typical bout of insomnia when inspiration struck. At 3 a.m., he scribbled down the business plan for an organization that he and pals Riawna Capri and Nikki Lee, founders of Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood, California, had discussed over various vacations for years. A marriage of Coulter's background in the cancer community and the salon owners' craving for another charitable cause, The BeYOUtiful Foundation (TBF) was born. "We wanted to create resources, education, support and information not only for cancer patients, but also stylists and salon owners," explains Coulter, president of TBF. "I didn't learn about treating women with cancer in beauty school; I didn't have the necessary education on this," Capri adds. "When clients want to know what they should do when their hair falls out after chemo, or why it's suddenly curly or frizzy when it grows back, or how they can get color, wigs or extensions—they should be able to fi nd a salon and stylist that is knowledgeable about that." Launched in July, TBF is creating education in collaboration with medical experts on these and other common cancer queries; reaching out to stylists and salons to receive this crucial know-how; and locating patients who seek services so they can team up with trained pros to battle their hair woes. Fundraising kicked off on August 5, when Nine Zero One Salon offered free haircuts to patients and survivors, while customers were charged $150 for cuts with 100 percent of proceeds donated to the foundation. "We've already had a lot of positive feedback and salons jumping at the opportunity to be involved," Coulter enthuses. "As we grow, we want people to design their own events to contribute, too, thus creating something that everyone can be a part of." Live & Learn/ Giving Back Be YOU tiful Beginnings BIG GOALS For the future, the philanthropic trio behind the foundation envisions not only stylists but entire salons being BeYOUtiful-certified so that cancer patients can easily find them via an online directory. TBF is also partnering with a credit card service merchant so that for every salon using its system, it will donate a portion of the transaction fee back to the cause—thereby making ze ro dent in a salon's bottom line.
