TREND S ETTER S Runway Report Ted Gibson taps moody muse Lydia Deetz for a twisted look at Carmen Marc Valvo. —KARIE L. FROST W ith a runway swathed in swirls of smoke and a collection heavy on gothic Victorian references, fi nding hair inspiration in the compelling weirdness of goth girl Lydia Deetz from the movie Beetlejuice certainly is fi tting at the Carmen Marc Valvo show. "Carmen's inspiration for this collection was Victorian punk, so we wanted to create something that was fun and downtown chic, yet really dramatic," says L'Oréal Professionnel (@lorealpro) hair lead Ted Gibson. Thumbing through the collection's moody brocades and high-necked silhouettes instantly sparked Gibson's creativity. "After seeing the dark vibe I immediately thought of Edward Scissorhands and Winona Ryder's character Lydia in the movie Beetlejuice, hence the beetle and scarab barrettes to top off the look!" says Gibson. These barrettes, intentionally scattered about each model's head by Valvo himself, add fl ecks of stunning sparkle, but the true showstopper of this style is the hand-rolled faux twist. "After we create a ponytail, we're putting Tecni.Art Architexture Matte Defi ning Paste on our fi ngers and then coating and twisting ¼-inch sections of hair to form our twists," says Gibson. Each twist is then pinned into random loops, their pointy ends dangling down the back of the head. It's all Lydia without the melancholy—a gorgeous ode to beautiful weirdos everywhere.
